Nov 15, 2024 | Cross Country
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M cross country team earned a pair of top-six finishes at the NCAA South Central Regional Friday morning at the Watts Cross Country Course, with the men placing fourth and women sixth.
The Aggies wrapped their final home meet in front of 2,000 members of the 12th Man, as both programs battled with the best in the region securing top-six results as a team. A&M had four standout performers who earned South Central All-Region honors for top-25 finishes, with Gilbert Rono and Zack Munger receiving the honors on the men's side and Shewaye Johnson and Kennady Fontenot on the women's.
Johnson paced the women's team around the 6k course finishing 22nd with a time of 20:08.4. She was followed by Fontenot in 25th (20:17.4), Megan Roberts in 34th (20:34.2), Maddie Peters in 38th (20:38.2) and Maddie Livingston rounded out the scorers in 45th (20:51.1).
"The girls did what we asked and put themselves in a good position," distance coach Wendel McRaven said. "They raced a lot better at this meet than the SEC Championships and showed a lot of growth in the last two weeks. We have a lot of young talent on this team that haven't ran in a race like this one, so now we will talk about how we can prepare for next year and get this group back to the national meet."
On the men's side, Rono led the Aggies throughout the 10k race, recording a time of 29:55.8 to place 17th. Munger followed closely behind in 19th (29:59.8). Jack Johnston (30:30.5), Aiden Gonzalez-Rodiles (30:40.6) and Jonathan Chung (30:41.0) concluded the scoring, finishing back-to-back-to-back in 31st, 32nd and 33rd, respectively. Rono and Munger were also a part of a 20-athlete group that broke the previous 10k course record.
"We knew that if we were going to make it as a team, we would need to put the pressure on everyone," McRaven added. "I thought we did a great job with our plan and were second about halfway through the race. We have a lot of young guys on this team and I'm hoping this gives them the perspective of what it takes to make that next step."
