Texas A&M Opens Campaign at Cowboy Preview
Aug 29, 2024 | Cross Country
STILLWATER, Okla. – The Texas A&M Cross Country team opens its 2024 campaign with the Cowboy Preview Friday at the Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course, with the men's race starting at 8:15 a.m., followed by the women's gun firing at 8:45 a.m.
The Aggies are set to compete in a small but talented field of five teams, including Arkansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Tulsa. The men start the day running the 5k course, shortly followed by the women who make their way around the 3k circuit.
"We're excited to kick off the season," distance coach Wendel McRaven said. "We get to go up against some really good teams on a great course and it will be fun to see some of our new faces racing in the Maroon & White."
The women's team is coming off a historic 2023 campaign, as they reached the NCAA Championships as a group for the first time in 23 years. A&M returns four of the five scorers from the national meet, including the highest-place finisher Maddie Livingston, who received South Central All-Region honors along with Kennady Fontenot. The team also logged a sixth-place result at the SEC Championships which was its highest since 2014.
Coming off their best conference finish since 2015, the men's team brings back three of the five SEC Championship scorers with Cooper Cawthra returning as the highest-ranking finisher. Jonathan Chung also rejoins the men's squad after receiving South Central All-Region honors, following a 24th-place result at the regional meet a season ago. The Maroon & White added experience to the squad, as Victor Kibiego joins the team this season following a 44th–place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship last year competing for UTEP.
