Aug 30, 2024 | Cross Country
STILLWATER, Okla. – The Texas A&M women's cross country team claimed the team title behind San Juanita Leal's debut victory, while the men placed second at the Cowboy Preview Friday at the Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course.
"It was a solid opener for us on both sides," distance coach Wendel McRaven said. "It's nice adding some new faces into the mix. I'm pleased with the women taking the team win and the men finishing second."
In the opening action of the 2024 season, the Aggies put on a show in Stillwater. The women's team topped the ranks on the 3k course, besting No. 15 Oklahoma State, Tulsa and Oklahoma. Freshman Leal had the perfect start to her collegiate career, claiming the individual title by a staggering seven seconds and crossing the line in 10:30.2. A&M had another standout freshman performance, as Maddie Peters finished sixth overall and fifth among attached runners in a time of 10:44.5. The three remaining point scorers all placed in the top 15, as Megan Roberts ranked 10th (10:46.7), Kennady Fontenot placed 14th (10:54.6) and Elise Smoot rounded out the group in 15th (10:58.7).
"San Juanita [Leal] taking the individual title was great," McRaven added. "She just took the lead from the gun and never looked back, a great debut for her in Maroon & White."
The men started the day running around the 5k circuit and logged a second-place team result to open the year. Sophomore Zack Munger recorded the best finish of his collegiate cross country career, pacing the Aggie men with a time of 15:03.7 to finish third. Transfer Luca Santorum grabbed a sixth-place result in his first action for A&M in 15:11.6. Concluding the scorers was Jack Johnston in 12th (15:19.3), Diego Heredia in 17th (15:27.8) and Aiden Gonzalez-Rodiles in 21st (15:38.0).
