BIRMINGHAM – Texas A&M cross country's Cooper Cawthra was named men's SEC Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league announced Wednesday.
Cawthra's final season in Aggieland has been one to remember, as the graduate has guided the men's team to a pair of meet titles and claimed one individual crown in the three races he has competed in this season.
The Keller, Texas, native has led the men's program from the front, pacing the squad in all three-races he participated in. Cawthra had two specific standout performances, the first coming at the Texas A&M Invitational where he claimed the individual title and the second at the Arturo Barrios Invitational where he broke the program record around the Watts 8k course as he became the first Aggie to run sub-23 minutes (22:58.6).
His performance in the classroom separated him among the league's best, sporting a 3.83 GPA while pursuing his master's degree in agricultural leadership & development. Cawthra's academics earned him a plethora of honors throughout his college career, landing on the AD Honor Roll and SEC Honor Roll eight times while also being named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete twice.
Cawthra and the Aggies set their sights on the postseason, as they head to Knoxville for the SEC Championship Friday with the men's 8k starting at 9:08 a.m. and women's 6k at 9:53 a.m.
