Bottego, Women’s Medley Relay Highlight Day Two at SEC Championships

ATHENS – Senior diver Allen Bottego notched the team's highest finish of the meet thus far and the women's 200 medley relay team posted a top-three time in program history as SEC Swimming & Diving Championships continued Tuesday at the Gabrielsen Natatorium. The women currently sit in third with 130 points, while the men are in seventh with 111 points.
The women's 200 medley relay got the evening session started in a big way as Kaitlyn Owens, Bobbi Kennett, Olivia Theall and Chloe Stepanek teamed up to clock the third-fastest time in program history, going 1:35.43 to place sixth. Owens posted a personal-best 23.78 leadoff 50 back to help the Aggies notch their first relay A-cut of the season.
The 800 free relay team of Stepanek, Jordan Buechler, Katie Walker and Hayden Miller followed with a season-best and NCAA B-cut time of 7:04.07 to close out the women's events with another sixth-place finish.
Bottego used a strong performance in 3-meter prelims that saw him score over 70 points on three of his final four dives, including 81.9 on his third. He secured third with a score of 386.30 to advance to the A-final. Bottego leaned on his strength from prelims, closing out the final with a score of 87.4 on his last dive of the night to place fourth with an overall score of 406.25.
Jaxon Bowshire, Rhett Hensley and Matthew Aigner rounded out the Aggies in action on the 3-meter. Bowshire posted a score of 304.70 to place 24th and Hensley was just behind him in 25th with a score of 304.00, while Aigner took 36th with a score of 237.75.
The men's 200 medley relay team of Thomas Shomper, Travis Gulledge, Connor Foote and Ben Scholl notched a top-eight time of 1:23.80 in the first men's swimming event of the meet. Foote lowered his program-best 50 fly split with a time of 19.64 and Scholl clocked a personal-best 18.65 50 free split, good for third all-time at A&M.
Closing out the night, the 800 free relay squad of Baylor Nelson, Jacob Wimberly, Collin Fuchs and Trey Dickey posted a season-best NCAA B-cut time of 6:18.22 to finish ninth. Wimberly highlighted the race with the third-fastest 200 free split in program history, going 1:33.15.
Individual swimming events begin Wednesday with the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free, and diving continues with the women's 3-meter.
