Aggies Secure Five-Medal Haul on Second Day of SEC Championships

LEXINGTON – The Texas A&M track & field team secured five medals on the second day of the SEC Championships Friday at the Shively Track & Field Stadium.
The Aggies set up a thrilling final day at the conference championships, as they won five medals on the second day of the meet, including two gold, one silver and two bronze. A&M's production on the day didn't end there, as they had another three points scorers and booked eight additional finals spots.
Sofia Yakushina added SEC champion to the list of honors in her debut season, as she became the first freshman since 2018 to claim the heptathlon title with 6,075 points. The NCAA leader entered the day in first with 3,548 points and continued to dominate, winning all three remaining events. She opened with the long jump with a leap of 6.35m/20-10 which moved her up to No. 9 on the all-time performers list. The freshman followed that up with a toss of 39.98m/131-2 in the javelin and a time of 2:14.41 in the 800m. Her heptathlon title wasn't the end of her star-studded day, as she also claimed the bronze medal in the individual long jump event following a leap of 6.18m/20-3.5, edging out fourth by just one centimeter.
Aleksandr Solovev highlighted an outstanding showing from the men's pole vault group, as he captured his first SEC title with a school-record clearance of 5.72m/18-9.25 which was previously held by Aggie Olympian Jacob Wooten. Solovev didn't miss a bar on his way to a successful attempt at 5.60m/18-4.5 which secured gold, before he went on to set the new program best on his final bar. Leo Bowen also had a standout day in the event, finishing seventh with a personal-best mark of 5.40m/17-8.5 to earn the first conference points of his career. The sophomore's clearance debuted him at No. 10 in the A&M record books. Jack Mann III rounded out the group, matching his career best of 5.40m/17-8.5 finishing ninth just outside of the point-scoring positions.
A&M's steeplechase group left its mark on the crowd in Lexington, as Debora Cherono and Kennady Fontenot scored big points for the women's team with a 3-4 finish, while Victor Kibiego finished second in the men's event. The women took the track first and standout freshman Cherono captured her first conference medal after crossing the line in 9:58.16 which is the second-best time in program history behind only her own school record. Fontenot was right behind Cherono in fourth, securing her best finish at a conference championship meet after finishing in 10:05.31. Kibiego secured back-to-back outdoor SEC championship medals in the steeple after claiming silver in the men's event, crossing the line in 8:44.80.
Milena Chevallier joined the point scoring for the women's team, as the freshman tied her personal-best clearance of 1.78m/5-10 in the high jump to place sixth and add three points to the team total. Chevallier's sixth-place finish was the highest of all freshmen, as she was also the only underclassman to score points in the event.
Jaiya Covington got the momentum started in the track prelims for the Aggies in the 100m hurdles, as the junior clocked a time of 12.85 out of the second heat which punched her ticket to Saturday's final as the third-fastest qualifier. Ja'Qualon Scott followed suit in the men's 110m hurdles, winning the second heat with a season-best mark of 13.26 to advance to the final as the second-overall seed.
The men's 1,500m 1-2 punch of Cooper Cawthra and Luca Santorum ensured their spots in Saturday's final, following strong showings in their respective heats. Cawthra topped the second run of the prelims, kicking on the final lap to win the heat in 3:45.05 earning automatic qualification to the final. Santorum put on another stellar come-from-behind performance, moving from fifth to second in the final 200m of the race to advance with a time of 3:51.05.
A&M's men's 400m group continued to secure finals berths, as Auhmad Robinson and Cutler Zamzow punched their tickets to tomorrow's finals. Robinson topped the third heat of the event with a time of 45.61 to earn automatic qualification, while Zamzow advanced as the top-timed qualifier after a mark of 45.49 out of the seventh and final heat.
The sprint duo of Jasmine Montgomery and Camryn Dickson struck again on the second day of prelims, as they both punched their ticket to the 100m finals. Montgomery ran in the fastest heat of the event, finishing third with a wind-aided time of 11.25 which concluded the event as the third-fastest overall time. Dickson battled a headwind in the final heat of the event, claiming automatic advancement for a second-place result in 11.42.
