Alex Varlan Joins Women’s Basketball Staff

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M women's basketball and head coach Joni Taylor announced scouting and collegiate coaching veteran Alex Varlan will be joining the staff as an Assistant Coach Saturday.
"We are very happy to have Alex move to Aggieland and be a part of our staff," Taylor said. "Alex is an extremely well-rounded coach with great experience in scouting and recruiting. He is someone that can wear a variety of different hats in our program. He is extremely competitive, and I look forward to seeing him grow as a professional at Texas A&M and how he impacts our community and team."
Varlan comes to Aggieland from Florida Atlantic University women's basketball where he spent the past three seasons. He coached for FAU as it transitioned to the American Athletic Conference prior to the 2023-24 season. Varlan oversaw the development of Mya Perry who led the program in 3-pointers made her first year and then earned an AAC Second Team All-Conference selection this past season, while leading the team in scoring in both campaigns.

My wife, Kelcie, and I can't wait to get to College Station and meet the Texas A&M community, the Aggie Network and the 12th Man."
The Knoxville native also helped guide Aniya Hubbard to become the program's first ever Conference USA Freshman of the Year. Hubbard also garnered CUSA second team, all-defensive and all-freshman team honors during the 2022-23 campaign.
Prior to his time in Boca Raton, Varlan was an assistant coach at Northeastern University during the 2021-22 campaign where he assisted in leading the program to a postseason berth at the Women's Basketball Invitational. As an assistant with the Huskies, Varlan was in charge of opponent scouting and recruiting.
From 2017-21, Varlan was a member of the Tennessee women's basketball staff, his alma mater. After operating as video coordinator for the first two years, he was promoted to director of scouting and analytics. He was responsible for scouting opponents and recruit evaluation. He also coached the male practice team and led player development. During his four years with the Lady Volunteers, the program went to four straight NCAA Tournaments.
Before Tennessee, he worked with the men's basketball program at Oakland University in Michigan from 2014-17. After serving as OU's video coordinator during the 2014-15 and 2015-16 campaigns, Varlan was named the team's director of scouting and recruiting innovation for the 2016-17 season where the team won the program's first ever regular season title in the Horizon League with a 14-4 conference record.
Prior to his stint at Oakland, Varlan was the basketball operations coordinator for the Delaware 87ers of the NBA D-League in Wilmington, Delaware, where he worked with future NBA players Thanasis Antetokounmpo, Kendall Marshall and Norvel Pelle. While there, he served as an on-court member of the coaching staff, participating in practices, workouts, film breakdown and scouting reports. Additionally, he worked as the liaison between players and coaches/front office staff and also managed the team's operations budget, equipment, travel and game day staff.
Before being promoted to working with the 87ers, Varlan was an intern with their NBA affiliate, the Philadelphia 76ers. With the 76ers, Varlan worked directly with the team's director of player personnel, scouts and coaching staff during the 2013 NBA Draft, 2013 NBA preseason and beginning of the 2013-14 NBA regular season. He continued as the liaison between the 87ers and 76ers coaching staffs throughout the 2013-14 NBA season and worked under President of Basketball operations Sami Hinkie and NBA Champion Brett Brown.
Varlan attended Tennessee and graduated in 2013 with a degree in communication studies. He worked in the athletics department and spent time with the Lady Vols' program in 2010, handling video services, stats and general team management activities under the tutelage of the legendary Pat Summitt.
Varlan is joined by his wife, Kelcie, who were married in 2024 and their dog, Luna.
