Maichon in Second after Third Round
CARLSBAD, Calif. – The Texas A&M men's golf team leaped seven spots in Sunday's third round of the NCAA Championship to move into a tie for eighth place heading into the final round of stroke play.
On a day where just two teams beat par, the Maroon & White cobbled together an even 288 round, surging into contention for the eight-team match play bracket. The Aggies registered a score of 12-over 876 in their first three loops around the par-72, 7,480-yard North Course at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.
Texas A&M is tied with Ole Miss and Texas Tech for eighth place. After tomorrow's final round of stroke play, eight teams advance to a match-play bracket to decide the national champion. Auburn (-10) leads the pack, followed by Arizona State (-6), Oklahoma (-3), Florida (-1), Oklahoma State (+5), Texas (+5) and Florida State (+9). The other teams vying for the eight spots, include Virginia (+13), BYU (+14), Pepperdine (+15), Vanderbilt (+15), Georgia Tech (+17) and Wake Forest (+17).
Aggie All-American Phichaksn Maichon is vying for the individual championship. Maichon posted a 4-under 68 in Saturday's round to move into second place. He owns a three-round score of 9-under 207 and trails leader Michael La Sasso (-11) by two strokes heading into Monday's final round.
Maichon went on a heater early Sunday, sinking birdie putts on each of the first five holes and registering a 32 on the front nine. He added three more birdies on the way in.
Wheaton Ennis and Michael Heidelbaugh helped the Aggies make the charge up the leaderboard with even rounds of 72. They both tallied four birdies on the day. Ennis ended the day in 65th place at 6-over 222 while Heidelbaugh is in 80th place at 8-over 224.

On Phichaksn Maichon setting the tone on Sunday…
"Early P wasn't the only one setting the tone. We got some red numbers on the board early and really I think the guys settled in for the fight. We knew the wind was going to come and we knew once we made the turn into hole nine and start working your way down the valley a little bit you're fighting into the wind. They just did a better job with the wind today and finished really well. It was a much better all-around 18-hole round today."
On not only getting inside the 15-team cut, but working up to eighth place...
"We talked about it last night. We didn't come here to get in the top 15. We really wanted to shorten that gap to eighth place so we could fight for a match play spot. We had one of the best rounds today and that put us in a really good place for tomorrow. If we can play a good round again tomorrow we have a good chance to get in there for match play."

On the round...
"I wanted to get off to a strong start today to help make it to tomorrow. We want to get to the match play and in order to do that we had to get to Monday. I made a lot of putts early. Then I looked at the scoreboard and saw the guys (teammates) jumping out with the reds (birdies). It definitely boosted me to play a lot better and gave me some momentum. I missed a couple putts coming down the stretch - that short one on 18 - but that's part of it."
On being second on the leaderboard individually headed to final round...
"You know I'm just going to play for the team, play the best I can and put the individual title aside. I'm going to play my best tomorrow. If that wins, great. If it doesn't, it doesn't."
