May 26, 2025 | Men's Golf
CARLSBAD, Calif. – All-American Phichaksn Maichon registered the best NCAA Championship finish in Texas A&M men's golf history with his runner-up showing Monday at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.
Maichon finished two strokes behind tournament champion Michael La Sasso of Ole Miss. Texas A&M's previous best was a third-place finish by Cameron Peck in 2011.
The Bangkok, Thailand native carded an even 72 Monday and finished the tournament at 9-under 207. Maichon held the lead at 11-under with five holes remaining, but was doomed by bogeys on No. 5 and No. 6 while La Sasso was able to birdie No. 4 and No. 6 to reclaim the two stroke lead he started the day with.
Texas A&M finished the tournament in 11th place. The Aggies started the day at the eighth-place cutoff for the match play portion of the tournament, but Ol' Sarge's 4-over 292 allowed them to be passed by a Virginia with a 4-under and Ole Miss with a 1-under on the day.
The Aggies finished at 16-over, 1,168, five shots off the cutoff.
In his first NCAA Tournament, Wheaton Ennis tied for 44th place. He registered Texas A&M's top score Monday with a 1-under 71. His four-round tally was 5-over 293.
In his last NCAA Tournament, Michael Heidelbaugh posted a 67th-place effort. He carded a 4-over 76 for the round and 12-over 300 for the tournament.
The last Aggie to play all four rounds was Aaron Pounds who tied for 78th at 19-over 307. His Monday circuit finished at 3-over 75.
Following the match, Maichon was honored on the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team along with being recognized by PGA TOUR University. He finished in the top 10 in the PGA TOUR U standings and earns a spot on the Korn Ferry Tour for the remainder of the 2025 campaign.

Head Coach Brian Kortan
On Phichaksn Maichon posting the best NCAA Championship finish in Texas A&M history…
"Obviously that was a great four-day stretch by him. I know he was trying his best there at the end to win that tournament, but it was still an outstanding performance. To top off a great A&M career with an outstanding performance here was awesome to see. He's got a great future ahead of him and he'll continue to make us proud."
On the team battling the last three days after the slow start Thursday...
"I got a group of guys that don't give up. They really care about each other, and they work hard. They never panicked this week. Today we just could get the momentum we needed to get going. But I'm really proud of the guys. What a great group. Obviously they are something to be really proud of."

On posting the best NCAA Championship finish in school history...
"I'll be able think about that later, but right now it still hurts a little bit not being able to win. Hats off to Michael (La Sasso) I gave it a good run, but he was tough down the stretch. I missed a couple putts for par and birdie toward the end that could've put some pressure on him and he answered with some birdies."
