Aggies Brave Strong Winds in First Round of Lubbock Regional
May 04, 2025 | Women's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 19 Texas A&M women's golf team fought through nearly 30 MPH winds Sunday in the first round of the NCAA Lubbock Regional into sixth place at The Rawls Course.
"We have to choose which team we want to be," Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "We can be that team on the back nine or the front nine. We have to choose to do the little things right and we will be able to accomplish everything that we want to as a team. There are 36 holes left, and I know this group will come out and fight for every one of them."
The Aggies began on the back nine and shot 16-over before making the turn back to the front. The Maroon & White flipped the script on the front and fired a 2-over to give them an 18-over 306 for the first 18. The Texas A&M front nine score was the second best of any team in the field.
The first round was originally scheduled to start Monday morning. However, due to expected weather, the tournament officials changed the start to directly after the practice round Sunday morning.
The top five consisted of No. 7 Wake Forest (+1), No. 2 Texas (+2), Iowa State (+10), Tennessee (+17) and No. 18 Arizona (+17). Texas A&M was just one shot back of the top five after Sunday's round.
Vanessa Borovilos led the way with a 3-over 75 on a course that averaged 77.1 strokes per golfer. The freshman was tied for 14th and Wake Forest's Carolina Chacarra and FGCU's Louisane Gauthier led all individuals at 3-under 69.
The Maroon & White took advantage of the par-5 No. 2, picking up three strokes on the hole. Borovilos knocked down a birdie and Kynadie Adams nailed an eagle, which was one of two eagles on the day for the entire field. Adams shot 5-over 77 and tied for 30th.
Sky Sudberry cracked the top 20, shooting 4-over 76 with a share of 19th. Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio tied for 38th and Mia Nixon tied for 61st to round out the lineup.
