BIRMINGHAM – The Texas A&M track & field team earned three SEC outdoor awards following the conclusion of the conference championships, the league office announced Monday.
The Aggies collected three of the conferences' 14 postseason awards, as Sofia Yakushina and Winny Bii repeated their indoor honors securing Women's Freshman Field Athlete of the Year and Women's Newcomer Field Athlete of the Year, respectively, while Aleksandr Solovev garnered his first postseason recognition earning Men's Newcomer Field Athlete of the Year.
Yakushina added to her historic rookie season, as she broke the NCAA freshman heptathlon record in her first collegiate outdoor meet. She racked up 6,260 points over the two-day competition which broke the previous record of 6,200 set in 2021. She continued to dominate and stood out among all women in the conference at the SEC Championships, winning the heptathlon title making her the first freshman to do so since 2018. Yakushina wasn't done there, as she added a second medal to her tally in the long jump after claiming bronze with a leap of 6.18m/20-3.5. Her pair of top-three finishes made her the only women's field athlete at the meet to win a pair of medals.
Bii added her second SEC honor to her resume during her first season in Aggieland, as she secured second in the triple jump at the conference championships. She leapt a personal-best mark of 14.01m/45-11.75 at the SEC Championships which matched her indoor best and broke the Kenyan outdoor national record in the event, while also securing the top wind-legal mark in the nation this year.
Solovev took his success to another level during the outdoor season, as he captured his first SEC title in the men's pole vault. He cleared 5.72m/18-9.25 at the conference championships which secured the gold medal and broke the school record in the event. Solovev now holds the top spots in A&M history both indoor and outdoor, and is the only vaulter in the country this year to clear 5.70m in both seasons.
