No. 7 Women's Golf Jumps Out to 13-Shot Lead at Carmel Cup
Aug 29, 2025 | Women's Golf
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The No. 7 Texas A&M women's golf team jumped out to a dominant 13 stroke lead with a 7-under 353 in the first round of the Carmel Cup at the historic Pebble Beach Golf Links Friday behind freshman Brynn Kort and junior Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio who led the field at 3-under 69.
"Feels like we are continuing where we left off at home in qualifying," head coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "We are seeing a lot of quality shots and consistency from our team. It is only round one, so we need to continue to do the same thing moving forward. I really like us teeing off first tomorrow and I am hopeful we can put another good round up on the board. To have all of our golfers turning in solid scores is a great sign, but we still have things we can clean up going into Saturday."
The Aggies were out in front of No. 21 Mississippi State (+6), No. 20 Oklahoma State (+7), No. 11 Vanderbilt (+8), No. 24 TCU (+11) and No. 10 Arkansas (+11). The Maroon & White shot a staggering 8-under on the front nine as a team and lost just one shot as conditions worsened and the back nine asserted itself on the rest of the field.
Kort, in her collegiate debut, recorded just one bogey and had birdies on Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 10. Fernández García-Poggio led the team with six birdies and is seeking her third collegiate victory of her career. Kort and Fernández García-Poggio were the lone two at the top of the individual leaderboard.
Vanessa Borovilos was tied for third at 2-under 70. The sophomore was even par heading into the par-5, No. 18 and nailed an eagle, the only eagle for any golfer all round, after hitting her 3-wood from 225 yards to four feet in two to get within one stroke of Kort and Fernández García-Poggio.
Sky Sudberry also turned in a spectacular round at even par. Sudberry held onto a share of 11th after 18 holes. Natalie Yen was the final counting score at 1-over 73 and was tied for 16th. Scarlett Schremmer shot 4-over 76 and was knotted up for 29th to round out the lineup.
The Aggies tee off for the second round Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Live stats for the tournament can be found at scoreboard.clippd.com.
