PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The No. 7 Texas A&M women's golf team ballooned its lead to 24 strokes Saturday in the second round of the Carmel Cup at the historic Pebble Beach Golf Links thanks to a 3-under 69 from sophomore Vanessa Borovilos.
"Wind picked up pretty significantly and that back nine played really hard," head coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "I was proud of the way we dug in and fought. Overall, another great day. We shot a red number, and I am very impressed with where we are in the first tournament of the year. The back nine made us better today. We had to hit some golf shots, and I am excited to see how we play tomorrow."
The Aggies stood at 9-under 711 thru two rounds and the second-place team was No. 11 Vanderbilt at 15-over 735. Rounding out the top five in the team standings were No. 24 TCU (+16), No. 10 Arkansas (+20) and No. 20 Oklahoma State (+20). Texas A&M's largest margin of victory during the Chadwell era was a 38-shot triumph at the 2025 "Mo" Morial Invitational.
Borovilos was in solo first at 5-under 139 after 36 holes. The Canadian shot a 31 on the front nine with birdies on Nos. 1, 3, 6, 7 and 8. Borovilos was one shot ahead of teammate Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio and Mississippi State's Avery Weed.
Fernández García-Poggio was 4-under 140 after two rounds and got back two strokes on No. 13 when she holed out from 165 yards with a five-iron for a two on the par-4.
Freshman Natalie Yen shot 1-under 71 on the day to get back to even par for the tournament and held onto a share of seventh, while junior Sky Sudberry went 1-over 73 Saturday to take a piece of 10th into Sunday.
Freshman Scarlett Schremmer was the last counting score at 2-over 74 and was tied for 27th. Brynn Kort rounded out the lineup with a 7-over 79 but was still tied for 17th.
The Aggies tee off for the second round Saturday at 9:55 a.m. Live stats for the tournament can be found at scoreboard.clippd.com.
