BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION -- After 35 years of service at Texas A&M, Associate AD for 12th Man Productions Andy Richardson will retire on Sept. 1. Richardson has guided the department's video production team through decades of evolution as it is now home to one of the premier production studios in college athletics and continues to raise the bar with award-winning content.
"Aggieland is a special place, and I have loved it all. Truly, reality has outpaced my childhood dreams growing up a stone's throw from A&M," Richardson said. "When I started in athletics, I was producing the coaches TV show and helping shoot football practice. One day we added a videoboard in Kyle Field and the world of stadium productions began. Later, we joined the SEC and the commitment to the SEC Network changed our world again in a big way. It's awesome how 12th Man Productions has evolved to meet every challenge and continues to impact the Aggie experience today with a staff that's best in the business."
A 1987 graduate of Texas A&M with a degree in journalism, Richardson began working at the university as a producer/director with KAMU-TV in 1991. In 1993 he was hired by athletics to produce a football coaches TV show and assist with other production needs.
Under Richardson's guidance, the current 12th Man Productions facility was created as part of the Kyle Field redevelopment in 2014, featuring four HD control rooms, two production studios and six post-production editing suites. The facility was awarded the 2018 Technology Leadership Award for innovation and performance by both Sports Video Group and NACDA. The 12th Man Productions staff has won multiple national awards for their work including SVG Awards, Telly Awards, and Regional Emmys.
Richardson, a native of Bryan, Texas, has overseen a staff of 15 creative and technical professionals as well as a student worker staff of nearly 100 Aggies. Their work supports athletics' creative video content in a wide variety of spheres, including everything from the broadcast of events for the ESPN family of networks as well as the in-stadium experience with video boards for various teams. The daily video content that facilitates team social media coverage for all Aggie teams also falls under his umbrella of scope and operational support. For the past 25 years, Richardson has helped orchestrate the Kyle Field gameday experience, collaborating with the Yell Leaders, Aggie Band, football team and other stakeholders.
An award-winning journalist himself, Richardson has worked at CBS and PBS network affiliates. He was a freelance videographer for Super Bowl XXIX, XXX, and XXXI, and spent the summer of 1996 assisting the video operations for NFL Europe's Barcelona Dragons. His concept for the 12th Man Productions documentary recounting the 1999 Bonfire Tragedy and Football game days later, titled "The Burning Desire", earned numerous production awards including a Gold Remi from the Houston Film Festival. Richardson also served as Executive Producer on two other documentaries, Standing Room Only, which highlighted the 100 years of the 12th Man tradition, and All-American, The Dat Nguyen Story, detailing the extraordinary life of the Aggie football legend.
