Testing Services
Academic Screening Exam
All incoming freshmen and transfers will be tested during New Student-Athlete Orientation using the Nelson Denny Reading Test. The primary uses of the Nelson Denny Test are to measure the student’s reading ability, predict student’s future academic success, and to measure the student’s progress due to educational intervention.
Learning Disability Testing
Students are encouraged to provide any previous educational diagnostic testing they may have to their coach or Scholastic Supervisor before arriving for classes at Texas A&M University. Issues such as ADHD, Reading Disorders, Math Disorders, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and Auditory Processing Disorder all qualify for accommodations much like the student received in high school.
Upon completion of the initial Nelson Denny screening, the Learning Specialists determine if the student-athlete is to be referred for a complete educational evaluation from the TAMU Counseling and Assessment Center or a local psychologist. If a learning disorder is diagnosed students will be referred to the Office of Disability Services to set up appropriate classroom accommodations. Students with ADHD or other diagnoses requiring possible medical intervention or counseling will also meet with a department physician.
