The Texas A&M equestrian team won each of the four varsity equestrian disciplines en route to a 12-8 win over Baylor at N.W. ?'Dick?™ Freeman Arena on Sunday.
The well-rounded team victory saw A&M (3-1) win each of the four disciplines ?- equitation over fences, equitation on the flat, horsemanship, and reining ?- by a 3-2 margin. The Aggies also grabbed three of the four rider MVP awards with all three won by freshmen.
Freshman Maggie Gratny (Leavenworth, Kan.) continued her hot streak in the reining ring by taking her third straight victory and MVP award. Gratny defeated Baylor?™s Lindsey Tomko, 73-67, to move to 3-0 on the season in reining.
Freshman Caroline Gunn (Greensburg, Ind.) moved her horsemanship record to 3-0 on the young season with a 73.5-70.5 win over the Bears?™ Missy Gonzalez. Gunn won her first MVP award of the season by posting the highest western score of the day by any rider all day long in either reining or horsemanship.
Freshman Lindsay Smith (West Friendship, Md.) also captured her first MVP award of the season thanks to a strong 84-72 win over Baylor?™s Mary Smitson (who would later win the equitation on the flat MVP award).
Sophomore Tonna Brooks (Newberg, Ore.) produced a stellar performance on Sunday, ending the day as the only A&M rider to put two tallies in the Aggies?™ win column. Brooks defeated Amanda Graber, 72.5-71.5, in horsemanship while squeaking out a 71.5-71 win over Maddie Mooney.
Senior Erica Palomo (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and sophomores Christina Matz (McKinney) and Ali Mueller (Long Beach, Miss.) each earned wins in equitation on the flat while junior Katie Henion (Austin) and freshman Kristi Waldal (Battle Ground, Wash.) did likewise over fences.
Sophomore Sibyl Parsons (Combine) joined Brooks and Gunn as A&M?™s horsemanship victors while senior Sassie Broaddus (El Paso) added the Aggies?™ third win in reining.
The Aggies will not compete again until Feb. 3, 2007, when they will travel to Waco for a rematch against Baylor.
