BRYAN - The third-ranked Texas A&M equestrian team kept its 2008-09 record unblemished with an 8-2 victory over Southern Methodist on Friday at the Brazos County Expo Complex.
The Aggies (3-0) turned in a perfect day over fences, sweeping SMU 5-0 while earning a 3-2 win in equitation on the flat. Friday's competition was only contested in the hunter seat discipline. SMU currently does not field a western squad.
"I'm so proud of how well we rode as a group," A&M hunter seat coach Linzy Woolf said. "There were no major mistakes and we looked very confident and consistent out there today. SMU has done an excellent job of recruiting and is really raising their level of riding as a team. This was no easy task we accomplished. SMU has a very young, talented group that will only get better with time. I'm very proud of how we rose to meet the challenge today."
Sophomore Brooke Coleman (Houston) led the charge for the fences crew by winning MVP honors following an 83-69 win over SMU freshman Jordyn Pettersen. Coleman has taken to the Aggies' new home like a fish to water, capturing fence MVP honors in the first two home competitions in the Expo Complex.
Junior Christina Heine (Toledo, Ohio) won her first flat MVP award in nearly a year after producing an 81-71 triumph over SMU junior Melissa Kowalchik. Heine's MVP honor is the third of her two-plus year collegiate career.
Junior Kristi Waldal (Battle Ground, Wash.) was one of three Aggie fence riders to post a score in the 80's. Waldal defeated Mustang sophomore Lauren Lieberman, 82-72. Senior Erin Ivy completed the 80-point trifecta with an 80-79 win over SMU junior Erica Buie.
Both sophomore Julie Pipoly (Toledo, Ohio) and junior Lindsay Smith (West Friendship, Md.) rose their seasonal fence records to 2-1 with victories against SMU. Pipoly defeated SMU sophomore Kate Wilson, 79-73, while Smith beat Mustang junior Kristen Collins, 78-68.
Junior Brittney Dodson (Amarillo) kept her own personal 2008-09 campaign perfect with a 77-76 win over Jordyn Pettersen. Freshman Megan Webb (Burlington, W.V.) earned the first win of her collegiate career with a 71-68 victory over SMU freshman Claire Wenholz.
With the win, the Aggies move to 3-0 on the season, as does the hunter seat team and the flat group. The fences group improves to 2-1 with their most impressive outing of the season.
The Aggies will spend the next three weeks preparing to face long-time rival Oklahoma State. The Aggies and the Cowgirls will face off on Saturday, Nov. 8, in Stillwater, Okla.
