STILLWATER, Okla. - The Texas A&M equestrian team dropped a 9-6 decision to host Oklahoma State during the semifinal round at the inaugural Big 12 Championship held at Animal Science Arena on Friday night.
The Cowgirls outlasted the Aggies, 9-6, in a match that lasted well into the evening hours. The start time of Friday's matches were pushed from 10 a.m. to approximately 1:30 p.m. after inclement weather delayed two of the four championships judges. The competition was also pushed indoors in its entirety due to the weather.
A&M squeaked past the Cowgirls in western riding, 4-3, to move its record in the discipline to a national-best 10-1 on the year.
Sophomore Amanda Ryan (Ramona, Calif.) earned the Aggies' other win in reining, grabbing a 144.5-142.5 win over Jacque Roberts.
Freshman Caroline Gunn (Greensburg, Ind.) won for the seventh time in eight matches, posting the highest western score of any of the four teams on the day in a 150-146.5 horsemanship defeat of Courtney Whitacre. Those two wins and a tie by sophomore Randi Standley (Madisonville) allowed the Aggies win the horsemanship discipline, 2-1.
Senior Tegan Zealy (Tampa, Fla.) improved to 8-3-1 on the season in equitation on the flat with a 151-125 victory over OSU's fences MVP Ally Blais. Another senior, Kristi Waldal (Battle Ground, Wash.), won her fences match over Cowgirl Taryn Nolte, 165-155, to grab her eighth victory of the year.
A&M will take on fourth-seeded Kansas State, who fell to top-seeded Baylor in a tiebreaker on Friday, in the consolation match on Saturday at 10 a.m.
