Game Notes
- Gonzaga starters were Janelle Bekkering, Vivian Frieson, Courtney Vandersloot, Heather Bowman, and Tiffanie Shives. Texas A&M starters were Damitria Buchanan, Tanisha Smith.
- Gonzaga is now 29-4 and currently riding a 20-game winning streak. Their next game will be against the winner of Xavier (the team they upset last year in the NCAA first round) and Vanderbilt. The Bulldogs' last loss dates back to December 20th when they were defeated by Texas A&M 80-76. The Aggies finish the season 26-8.
- Gonzaga is now 3-2 all-time in NCAA tournament play in their third appearance. This is now the deepest into the tournament the Bulldogs have advanced, following last year's second round exit to Pittsburgh in Seattle. The Aggies are now 9-7 all-time in NCAA Tournament play in seven appearances.
- Vivian Frieson did it all for the Bulldogs tonight. The six-foot senior from Seattle had 23 points (8-14 FG, 6-8 FT), 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 blocks, and 3 steals. She made clutch shot after clutch shot down the stretch, none more impressive than her step-back 13-foot jumper with 18 seconds left, putting the Bulldogs up 72-71, eventually the final score.
- Texas A&M pounded Gonzaga in the paint, outscoring them 48-28 in the three-second area. 6'1" junior Danielle Adams led the Aggies with 19 points and added 10 rebounds, while Adaora Elonu led the game with 14 rebounds.
- With the Aggies down 72-71 and time winding down, Adams was posted up and attempted a 15-footer from the baseline. The shot hit rim, missed, then was tipped by Gonzaga's Tiffanie Shives. Time expired as both teams scrambled for the ball.
- Aggie coach Gary Blair received a technical foul just over a minute (18:55) into the second half with A&M down 43-31. The foul, which occurred following a missed shot by Adams, sparked the Aggies. They proceeded to go on a 21-9 run, tying the game at 52 with 11:30 left.
- Tiffanie Shives, one of Gonzaga's heroes on Saturday, showed off her shooting range again. The 5'7" senior from Lansing, Mich. scored 11 points, including 3-6 from three-point range. Her biggest shot occurred with a little over two minutes left when Courtney Vandersloot drove-and-dished to Shives for a three pointer from the right wing, igniting the crowd and giving the Bulldogs a 70-67 lead. She is now shooting 58.3% (7-12) from three-point range in the tournament.
- Vandersloot, who compiled an impressive 15 assists in the first round game Saturday, had some struggles tonight. The WCC player of the year had 9 points, 6 assists, 3 steals, and 11 turnovers before fouling out with 1:22 left.
- Aggie do-it-all guard Tanisha Smith, who was one assist away from a triple-double Saturday, scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half, including 10 in the last 11 minutes.
