WACO, Texas - The Texas A&M equestrian team finished second at the Big 12 Equestrian championships on Saturday afternoon as the Aggies fell to host Baylor, 9-6, in the title match at Willis Family Equestrian Center.
The loss snapped A&M's five-show win streak and dropped the Aggies' overall record to 11-5. The Bears claimed their first Big 12 title and improved to 9-8.
Baylor took control of the show early by building a four-point lead following the hunter seat disciplines. A&M freshman Kori Pickett got the Aggies' first point of the day over fences with a 158-153 win over Kara Fergusson.
Sophomore Elizabeth Solch registered the squad's lone win on the flat and ran her unbeaten streak to 10 with a one-point victory over Baylor's Heather Healy.
At the same time, the Aggies began a comeback with horsemanship underway. Freshman Caroline Gunn then followed by winning her 14th ride of the season after downing Allison Orosz, 149-148. The two wins left the Aggies trailing, 7-4, with four reining rides remaining.
Texas A&M cut the Baylor lead to one with wins by junior Randi Standley and sophomore Courtney Dawe, but an MVP ride by the Bears' Amber Mooney would clinch the title for the host team.
The runner-up finish was the highest for the Aggies since winning the inaugural "Big 12 Classic", the predecessor of the current event, back in 2007.
Texas A&M now sets its sights on the Varsity Equestrian National Championships, scheduled for April 15-17 at the Heart O' Texas Coliseum in Waco.
