A&M Takes Down Georgia, 13-10
Oct 08, 2011 | Equestrian
The win was A&M's 18th straight at home and improved the Aggies' season record to 3-0. The Bulldogs (0-1) dropped their opening show of the year.
Nearly every ride on the day was a close one, but in the first half of the show A&M held its ground with a raw-score victory over fences and a one-point triumph in horsemanship.
Over fences, a 4-point win by Kori Pickett (79-75), 5-point win by Leah Chenelle (75-70) and 7-point win by Maggie Earle (81-74) would prove the difference. Georgia claimed three wins of its own in the discipline, but Texas A&M was declared winner in raw score, 474-466.
Carey Nowacek again led the charge in horsemanship, recording her third MVP award in as many shows this year following a 75-69 win over UGA's Gillian Chant. Coupled with victories by Katie Lisabeth (74-69) and Cassie Mantor (73.5-72), and a draw by Kelsey Adams (72-72), the Aggies took the discipline by a 3-2 score and led the show at intermission, 6-5.
With the momentum of the show in the balance, the flat riders picked up where their teammates left off and put forth their strongest effort of the season, claiming four of six rides to extend the Aggie lead to 10-7. Winners in the discipline for A&M were Lia Chafee (76-75), Maggie Earle (86-79), Marisa Bernal (81-77) and Hannah Soibelman (83-80).
The Aggie reiners then iced the overall team win thanks to victories by Courtney Kile (70-69.5), Abigail Grabein (69-68) and an MVP performance by Lindsey Bernbaum in a 71-68.5 triumph over Georgia's Jackie Hoyt.
Saturday's win was A&M's 17th in its last 18 regular-season matches dating back to the winter of 2010. Both Aggie teams (hunter seat and western) posted victories over the Bulldogs in the same show for the first time in school history.
Texas A&M will be back in action next Saturday (Oct. 15) when the Aggies travel to Las Cruces to face New Mexico State. A&M's next home show is Friday, Oct. 28 against TCU at the Expo Complex.
