No. 2 Aggies Drop Road Meet at OSU, 13-10
Feb 25, 2012 | Equestrian
Despite claiming three of the four possible MVP awards, the Aggies (7-2) lost both hunter seat disciplines in tiebreakers, then were narrowly clipped in both western disciplines for the first time this season. The Cowgirls, meanwhile, won their fourth straight and improved to 6-4.
A&M began the meet by putting up a strong fight in horsemanship before eventually dropping three of five rides (with another going down as a tie). Junior Amanda Brightwell earned her second career MVP award with a 77.5-point ride and junior Kesley Adams topped her Cowgirl opponent to stake the Aggies to a 2-0 lead, but OSU would win each of the next three rides by the smallest margin possible-one-half point-to take a 3-2 lead.
Meanwhile over fences, junior Kori Pickett and Lia Chafee picked up victories, and true freshman Kat Barkema-in her first career ride for the Aggies-earned MVP honors with an 85-77 win over Maggie Gampfer. Again, however, the Cowgirls would respond and claim the final two rides to tie the fences score at three apiece and claim the discipline victory in raw score.
The meet then shifted to reining and equitation on the flat. After dropping the first ride on the flat, the Aggies picked up three straight victories from seniors Marisa Bernal, Hannah Soibelman and Maggie Earle-the last of which earned MVP honors-to put A&M in good shape to take the discipline. OSU, however, saw its final two flat riders beat the Aggies by a combined nine points to give the Cowgirls yet another win in raw score.
At the same time in reining, the Cowgirls claimed three straight wins to open competition. Despite victories by senior Abigail Grabein and Emma Myers, Texas A&M was unable to overcome OSU's advantage and eventually fell 4-2 in the discipline.
The Aggies return to action on Friday and return home for the first time in nearly three months when they host Kansas State at the Brazos County Expo Complex. Show time is 10 a.m. and admission is free.
