
Women's Basketball Defeats Vanderbilt in SEC Opener, 75-61

COLLEGE STATION- Texas A&M's women's basketball team won their SEC season opener for the third year in a row, downing Vanderbilt 75-61 at Reed Arena on Friday night.
The win marks the 11th straight at home for the No. 5 Aggies (13-2, 1-0 SEC), who have won 21 straight against unranked teams at home.
Jordan Jones had a season-high 15 assists, the most by any Aggie in an SEC game and tied for the fifth-most in a single game in A&M history. Jones also surpassed Lisa Herner (1986-90) for seventh place on the A&M career assist list, and now has 440 for her career.
The Aggies jumped out to a 10-2 lead over the game's first four minutes, but the Commodores (8-5, 0-1 SEC) fought back, to take a 31-25 lead. Texas A&M closed out the first half on a 6-0 run, and closed the deficit to 32-31 at the break.
With the score tied at 38 in the second half, the Aggies rattled off an 11-2 run to take a 49-40 lead with 12:46 to play. Vanderbilt closed the gap to as few as four points, but the Aggies led the rest of the way for a 75-61 victory.
Courtney Williams led the Aggies in scoring with a season-high 22 points, her third 20+ point scoring game of the season. She was joined in double figures by Courtney Walker (17) and Achiri Ade (10). Ade picked up her first double-double of the season, adding in a team-leading 11 rebounds.
The Aggies now head to Fayetteville to face Arkansas at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, with coverage on ESPNU. A&M's next home game is Jan. 11 against LSU at 12 p.m. inside Reed Arena.
