College Station, TEXAS – The No. 8 Texas A&M equestrian team opened 2015 with a 13-2 victory over Delaware State, the first meet of a weekend doubleheader..
The Aggies defeated the Hornets in all four disciplines, taking home the MVP honors in each event. Audrey Gallagher and Marlena Parker won the honors on the hunter seat side while Avery Ellis and Ashley Dotson each picked up their first MVP award of the year in the western arena.
The Aggies opened the day with victories in equitation over fences and horsemanship, 3-1 and 4-0, respectively. A dominant horsemanship performance, highlighted by victories from Ellis, Kaci Fisher, Rachel Lucht and Logan Pluhar, was won by a decisive 294.5-283 margin.
Hunter seat wins for the Aggies came from Leah Chenelle, Parker and Hannah Williams over fences and Haley Buchmiller, Gallagher, Anna Rea and Williams on the flat.
A&M's excellent western performance was continued by the reining squad, where victories from Dotson and Laura Sumrall closed out the victory for the Aggies.
Several student-athletes had banner days on Friday. Freshman Avery Ellis not only won her first MVP award but did so in her first competition in the Maroon & White. Sophomore Kaci Fisher extended her undefeated streak to 7-0, an impressive feat as she is in the middle of a three competition weekend including the Sun Circuit Invitational.
The Aggies will close out the weekend's doubleheader on Saturday, taking on the New Mexico State Aggies at 10 a.m. at the Hildebrand Equine Complex. Texas A&M is 7-0 against the fellow Aggies since 2006 but this is their first time competing against each other at the new facility.
