No. 19 Women's Basketball Dominates Texas Tech, 90-56
Nov 26, 2017 | Women's Basketball
LUBBOCK, Texas- Chennedy Carter became the first Aggie freshman to score 30+ points in a single game, helping No. 19 Texas A&M to a dominating, 90-56 win over the Lady Raiders in a women's basketball game at United Supermarkets Arena on Sunday. It is the largest margin of victory for Texas A&M in the 76-game history of the series.
The Aggies (4-1), stormed out of the gates with a 34-5 run, forcing the Lady Raiders (3-2) to use two timeouts early. Texas A&M set school records for points in a quarter (34), 3-pointers in a quarter (6) and was a point away from tying the school record for fewest points allowed in a quarter. The Aggies would lead 49-17 at halftime, and never be seriously challenged in the game.
Carter, who set the Texas A&M freshman record for points in a single game with 30, went 12-of-18 from the field and 3-of-3 on 3-pointers. Carter has scored at least 15 points in all five of her career games, the only Texas A&M freshman to start a career in that fashion.
Carter was one of four Aggies to score in double figures, marking the fifth straight game the Aggies had four double figure scorers. Anriel Howard added 16, Jasmine Lumpkin had a season-high 14 and Danni Williams, playing in front of about 100 friends and family members from nearby Clovis, N.M., had 14, including 3 3-pointers in the Aggies' dominating first quarter.
The Aggies return home for a back-to-back next week, hosting Prairie View A&M on November 28 and Rice on November 29. Both games tip at 7 p.m. and are broadcast on SEC Network +.

Postgame Quotes
Texas A&M head coach Gary Blair
On coming back to Lubbock...
"You cannot beat the West Texas people. This might be the only time that you will have two alumni of Texas Tech coaching against each other. My radio man is Texas Tech, we were both in Thompson Hall. There was so many great memories. It was good being able to bring Danni back home because this is a lot closer for her than taking her to Albuquerque, which is 3.5 hours away. Danni got off hitting the three, [Anriel Howard] can now hit the three, she couldn't hit the backboard last year, but she spent the summer in the gym. Following these two [Howard and Carter] it's a great tandem to have because people were caving in on Hillsman... and Hillsman didn't have her best game but a lot of that was due to Tech's defense being pretty good on her. These two lit it up and when you can shoot what we did in the first quarter, I cannot remember a game since I have been at A&M that we have shot that well and everything was working. After the first quarter, it was probably a pretty even ball game. Give Tech credit for not giving up but staying with their game plan. They have a lot of young kids. Brewer is a monster and she did a great job."
On Texas Tech's performance...
"The one thing Candi can hold her hat on is that they out rebounded us and I need to give them credit. A lot of times they were finding people underneath, and that is the most zone I have played my team in in a long time. But then, we were able to identify where Caldwell was, she hit one shot early from deep and then she hit another one. I also thought we did a pretty good job on Blaire and then she hit a couple of good shots. Blaire's going to be a pretty good player. You have got to have Bright do a little bit more at the point. With those 3 post players (Brewer, DeGrate, Terry), they are going to create some havoc in the Big 12."
On Danni Williams' development at A&M...
"She did what most freshman today would not do, she waited her turn. She came here and played behind an All-American her freshman year and averaged three points a game. In today's world and involving social media and parents, they won't wait. They will transfer. She waited, played behind our all-time leading scorer, and now she went from three points a game and now she is averaging about 17. So the development is her work habits in the gym. Instead of pouting and worrying about playing time, she got better and this is a kid that is about a 3.5 student as well, so she will have a great career in whatever she decides to do. It was also great seeing the 100 or so people from Clovis who drove over here to watch her play, and it was very special. She was hot early and then she started forcing her shots, not letting the game come to her and they (Tech) starting identifying and she missed some in the second half. People are going in to stop her every game, but if they are going to leave Chennedy open, Chennedy will find a way to score."
On whether or not Recee' Caldwell being out made a difference in their game
"You also have to realize I had a lot of subs in and my subs don't play near as good of defense as that first group, and you were pounding the boards and giving it to Brewer. It is misleading, I was surprised she was out, but sometimes when the game is at hand you have got to give some younger kids some chances and let them grow up a little, and that's what we sort of did with the Wells kid. I think the Wells kid is going to be a good player for us."
On what was key to the ball game...
"They were not going to guard Jasmine Lumpkin early, she hit her first five shots, all mid-range shots and one layup. Jasmine is the girl that does not score in double figures but you challenge someone to hit that shot, and she was very good today."
On Jada Terry fouling out...
"She is just a very physical post player and last year she had her career high against us (24), we weren't scoring on her, she just has to learn how to play defense without fouling. We were not scoring on her, or DeGrate because Khallia was 1-6 but she went to the free-throw line 6 times. We have to get better inside because we are going to see South Carolina and Tennessee post players that are all McDonald's All-Americans that are all going to be pros. So what we have got to do, and Caylinne has to do a better job of, is scoring in traffic against shot blockers. Give Brewer her credit, she changed shots and then she blocked the rest of them. Brewer has a great future here."
Texas A&M forward Anriel Howard:
On how they thought that Tech changed their game up to make the score closer towards the end...
"I think the coaches gave them assignments and they changed up what they had to do and their athletes listened to them and it started to work. Their defense also started up a little more and we started to miss a few more shots because their defense was pretty good."
On if they relaxed after the first quarter with a 30-point lead ....
"Unfortunately, I feel like we did a little bit but then we picked it back up again but that's just where we have to be able to play strong the whole 40 minutes, not just up and down and up and down."
On her improved 3-point shooting...
"I definitely did work on that this summer because the three was not my strength, and I didn't have any confidence in it before, but since I worked on it all summer I have that confidence now."
Texas A&M guard Chennedy Carter
On A&M's fast start...
"I feel like we all executed the plays and we all ran the floor. Everyone was contributing on both ends of the court and we were able to find some holes in the defense and get a lot of open and quick shots in the first quarter."
Texas Tech head coach Candi Whitaker
Opening statement...
"Obviously, a really tough first quarter. A&M came out on fire and rattled us. We got really sped up and didn't handle that well, but I thought we handled the second, third and fourth quarter extremely well. Energy, effort, execution, and fight – I think the team showed a lot of character after getting down like that in the first quarter. That obviously can't happen. We have to find ways to fix it, but from the second through the fourth quarters, it's a five-point game and they had their starters in, so I think it speaks volumes to the character of this team."
