
Grottle, Smoot Named McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year Nominees

BIRMINGHAM – Texas A&M's Abby Grottle of the women's swimming & diving team and Will Smoot of the football team have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship. The scholarship has been presented by the SEC since 1986 to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes.
Grottle boasts a 3.88 cumulative GPA while working toward her degree in business management. She will graduate in May and attend law school at SMU in the fall. The Milton, Georgia, native has earned CSCAA Scholar All-America and CSC Academic All-District honors through her career, while also being named to the SEC and AD Honor Rolls. Grottle holds the seventh-fastest time in program history in the 1650 free (16:09.86) and the fourth-fastest time in the 1000 free (9:40.14). She recently earned All-America Honorable Mention accolades, helping the 800 free relay team earn a top-16 finish at NCAA Championships.
Smoot earned his degree in biomedical sciences in May of 2023 with a 3.97 undergraduate GPA and plans to attend medical school. The Houston native closed out his football career in the fall of 2023, registering a tackle against ACU in his final season. He was honored as a member of the 12th Man Kickoff Team, receiving the Brotherhood Impact Award at the team banquet. Smoot currently serves as the vice president for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
The league will name the 2024 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship in late April.
The SEC provides the league's male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $20,000 post-graduate scholarship. The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship. The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are announced in May, as well as honored by the league membership at SEC Spring Meetings in Destin, Florida.
