Meet Preview: Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational
Sep 25, 2024 | Cross Country
MADISON – The Texas A&M cross country team continues its 2024 season at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Friday held at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course with races starting at 11 a.m.
Returning to the road for their third test of the campaign, the Aggies look to build off a strong pair of races to open the season. The group will race on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course which will play host to the 2024 NCAA Championships at the end of the season, allowing the group to get a feel for the course prior to postseason action.
"This is a great opportunity for our teams to see great competition from around the country and preview the national championship course," distance coach Wendel McRaven said. "It will be a great chance for our younger runners to work on trusting themselves in the chaos of a championship caliber race."
The Maroon and White had a strong showing in their last outing at the Texas A&M Invitational, with a pair of second-place team finishes. Zack Munger added another third-place individual result to his record after recording a time of 23:32.7 in the 8k leading the Aggie men to a second-consecutive runner-up finish. The remaining point scorers were Jack Johnston (23:43.9), Luca Santorum (23:48.2), Gilbert Rono (23:52.6) and Jonathan Chung (23:54.9) finishing fifth, sixth, 11th and 14th, respectively.
On the women's side, freshman San Juanita Leal also placed third individually with a time of 17:11.5 on the 5k course, marking her second time leading all Aggie finishers. Texas A&M's four other point scorers ranked in the top 20, including Kennady Fontenot in ninth (17:25.9), Maddie Peters in 11th (17:28.8), Megan Roberts in 14th (17:46.7) and Emma Little in 16th (17:51.4).
25 teams in the women's race and 26 in the men's comprise an elite field in Madison. The men's race will be headlined by three teams ranked in the top-10 nationally: BYU (2nd), Iowa State (5th) and North Carolina (6th). The women's race will also feature three teams in the top ten, including 4th ranked Oregon, 5th ranked Washington and 10th ranked Providence.
