Buchanan's 87th-Minute Goal Sends Soccer to Victory over Lamar
Aug 17, 2025 | Soccer
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Trinity Buchanan scored in the 87th minute, propelling the Texas A&M soccer team to a 1-0 win over the Lamar Cardinals Sunday evening at Ellis Field.
After a scoreless first half, the Aggies (1-0-1) broke through late in the match. Hattie Patterson played a ball over the top from the midfield leading Buchanan toward the endline. With a Lamar defender bearing down on her, Buchanan finished with the outside of her left foot with a flick over the keeper into the bottom right corner. The tally was Buchanan's first at A&M, having arrived in Aggieland with 12 career goals.
The match was a physical battle that saw two red cards along with two yellow cards and numerous fouls. Taylor Jernigan was ejected for Texas A&M while Riley Wilson left the pitch for Lamar.
Texas A&M's back line featuring Bella Yakel, Riley Cooks, Peterson, and Mia Scranton held firm with the Aggie defense limiting Lamar to only one shot-on-goal across nine total attempts. Erica Defferding had one save as she recorded a shutout in her first Aggie start.
The Maroon & White dictated play throughout, finishing with a 22-9 advantage in shots and a 13-3 edge in corner kicks. Lamar's goalkeeper Eloise Bywater had a great showing with seven saves.

On the Aggies' first win of the season...
"You have to give Lamar a ton of credit. Nathan [Kogut] and his team really did a good job of creating a game plan that was going to slow us down and make us trip on ourselves a little bit. Both teams had their chances. Both teams played hard. You can see just how hard it is to play two games in four days, especially in the heat and humidity. There's a lot for our team to look at and understand that winners find ways, and this was a game that we had to find a way to win. Great individual effort by Trinity [Buchanan] to get the win and a pretty good overall performance by a lot of players out there."
Junior midfielder Trinity Buchanan
On her thoughts behind scoring the goal…
"I curved my run and Hattie, and I have a good connection. She played the ball over the top and I think because they were set up so high there was space in between so I gritted it outran. I found a gap and just tapped it in. Once I got up there then I found the angle for it."
On what she's learned about her team so far this season...
"We're really resilient and we want to get better we tied Baylor, we should have won , we were disappointed with that and we move forward with this one and I mean we won but we were still disappointed and I think that tells everyone a lot about our team that we want to show everyone what we can do and we have not yet shown our full abilities and we will do that."
Freshman defender Riley Crooks
On the adjustments made in the second half after each team was issued a red card…
"There is just no way to prepare for that. You're not used to having 10 players on the field. I think we adapted to it. Obviously, it's harder to play because you're running more. I think we did a pretty good job with it and we got the win."
