
Two Aggies Earn Wins in A&M Singles Debuts

HOUSTON – Two newcomers claimed victories in their Texas A&M women's tennis team debuts Friday at the Rice Invitational. Violeta Martinez and Tilde Stromquist were triumphant in their Flight 1 Singles first round matches at George Brown Tennis Center.
Martinez, a senior transfer from Illinois, toppled SMU's Allie Bittner, 6-2, 7-6. Stromquist, a freshman from Sweden, made quick work of Sam Houston's Christine Jevicky, 6-0, 6-3.
Two Aggies were on the wrong end of Friday's results. In Flight 2 Singles, freshman Anna Perelman dropped a grueling three-setter to SMU's Ellie Mireles, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Avery Esquivel was defeated in her Flight 3 Singles match against SMU's Caroline McGinley, 6-3, 6-1.
Action picks up with singles semifinals and consolation matches Saturday.
Martinez and Perelman teamed up to win two matches in Flight 1 Doubles. They bested UTSA's Valerie Sanchez/Celine Absawi, 6-2, and North Texas' Carolina Laydner/Marina Adati, 6-3. Martinez/Perelman face Houston's Chems Doha Zeghlouli/Sophie Schouten in the Flight 1 Doubles finals Saturday.
Saturday's action begins with doubles starting at 9 a.m. followed by singles play at 11:30 a.m. Streaming will be available on RiceOwls.com.
The tournament field features players from Houston, North Texas, Rice, Sam Houston, SMU, UTRGV and UTSA. The eight-player singles flights will continue with semifinals action Saturday, and title matches Sunday.
