Harris Defends Heptathlon Title on Second Day of SEC Indoor Championships

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M track & field's Blake Harris defended his heptathlon title on the second day of the SEC Indoor Championships Friday at the R.A. 'Murray' Fasken '38 Indoor Track & Field facility.
Harris ensured back-to-back SEC heptathlon titles after accumulating 5,969 points, making him the first repeat champion since 2022. He carried 3,365 points into the second day and continued his dominant stretch, leading off with a first-place finish in the 60m hurdles (7.96) and rounded it out with second in the pole vault (4.50m/14-9) and third in the 1,000m (2:41.93). Throughout his seven-event series he broke three personal bests, culminating in a career-high total which improves his mark at No. 2 in A&M history.
Henry Zimmerman had an outstanding showing in his SEC debut, securing the silver medal in the men's weight throw. The New Albany, Ohio, native recorded a toss of 22.84m/74-11.25 on his sixth-and-final throw to ensure the second place. The throw ranks No. 2 in school history behind his own school record (22.96m/75-4).
Ja'Qualon Scott further cemented himself as the greatest hurdler in Texas A&M history, as he lowered his own school record in the 60m hurdles to win the prelims. He crossed the line in 7.46 which is tied for the seventh-fastest mark in NCAA history, the time also broke the facility record and ranks tied for No. 1 in the nation this year. In the women's hurdle event, Jaiya Covington ran a season-best time of 7.94 in the opening heat to advance to tomorrow's final fourth overall.
Adam Averett also completed a standout heptathlon series, securing 5,315 points which earned him a fifth-place finish. He brought 3,010 points into day two and concluded his campaign taking fifth in the 60m hurdles (8.61), seventh in the pole vault (4.10m/13-5.25) and fourth in the 1,000m (2:44.29). His 5,315 points entered him at No. 11 on the A&M all-time performers list.
The high jump duo of Bradie Menegatti and Milena Chevallier added four points to the women's total on the second day of competition. Menegatti cleared a personal-best mark of 1.81m/5-11.25 to claim sixth place, the jump also entered her in the A&M all-time list at No. 8. Following suit was Chevallier, taking seventh with a leap of 1.76m/5-9.25.
Sophia Bendet and Elise Smoot booked their spots in the women's mile finals, as both qualified out of the third-and-final heat. Bendet crossed the line in 4:39.20 which was good third in the section, sixth overall and moved her up to No. 2 in the Aggie record books. Smoot finished closely behind in 4:40.63, just shy of her personal best, to secure the final timed advancing spot which ranked eighth overall.
The men's 800m group progressed two to tomorrow's final, courtesy of Peter Narumbe and Reece Sharman-Newell. Narumbe topped all competitors running out of heat three, finishing in 1:48.54, while Sharman-Newell claimed the final timed slot after crossing the line in 1:49.46.
After the second day of competition, both the men's and women's teams ranks second with 28 points each.
