Zimmerman Breaks School Record on Opening Day of Battle on the Bayou

BATON ROUGE – Texas A&M track & field's Henry Zimmerman broke the hammer throw school record in his outdoor Aggie debut on the opening day of the Battle on the Bayou Friday at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium.
Zimmerman carried his record-breaking ways to the outdoor season, as he broke the hammer throw school record in his debut of the event. He recorded a toss of 66.84m/219-3 in the third round which downed the previous program best which stood for nine years. His mark was good for fifth overall. On the women's side, Jayla Hooper also tacked on another all-time mark as she moved up from No. 5 to No. 4 following her personal-best mark of 60.72m/199-2 which placed her ninth.
Staying dominant in the throws, the men's javelin duo of Sam Hankins and Zaza Nnamdi put on a show to sweep the top-two spots in the event. Hankins led the way with a mark of 73.53m/241-3, while Nnamdi was right behind at 71.31m/233-11. In the women's event, the Aggies recorded three finishes in the top five. Katelyn Fairchild led the group at 55.27m/181-4 which was good for second, McKenzie Fairchild placed third (54.76m/179-8) and Ana De La Garza rounded out the results in fifth with a personal-best toss of 49.70m/163-0.
Camryn Dickson took the momentum to the track, as the standout senior clocked the fastest time in the nation to win the women's 200m. She crossed the line in 22.69 to top the national ranks through the first three weeks of the outdoor season. Jasmine Montgomery also placed eighth in the event with the 11th fastest time this season of 22.99.
Freshman phenom Peter Narumbe kicked off his outdoor campaign, placing second in the men's 1,500m. He finished in 3:43.83 which debuted him at No. 8 in the Aggie record books in the event. Debora Cherono topped the women's contingent for the Maroon & White, placing fourth in 4:18.58, while Sophia Bendet placed sixth in 4:21.69 which landed her seventh in A&M history.
Hunter Jackson tacked on another runner-up finish in the men's 3,000m steeplechase, clocking a personal-best time of 9:00.31.
Lily Carlson opened her outdoor slate with a fifth-place result in the women's pole vault, the freshman cleared 4.15m/13-7.25 which ranks sixth on the A&M all-time list. Ava Riche and Ella Vajdos each recorded a mark of 4.00m/13-1.5, but for Vajdos that was a personal best and landed her 12th in the Aggie record book. In the men's event, Oleg Ananev also finished fifth after soaring over a season-best bar of 5.30m/17-4.5.
