WACO – Former Texas A&M head football coach R.C. Slocum will receive the Lamar Hunt Lifetime Achievement Award from the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, as announced by the organization Tuesday.
Slocum, a 2005 inductee to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, will become the eighth recipient of the prestigious honor. He will be formally recognized at the Lamar Hunt Lifetime Achievement Legends Gala Friday, November 13, at Kyle Field's Ford Hall of Champions ahead of the Aggies' home football game against Tennessee.
Established in 2006, the Lamar Hunt Lifetime Achievement Award is the Texas Sports Hall of Fame's highest honor. The award recognizes individuals whose leadership, vision and service have made a lasting impact on sports in Texas and beyond.
Slocum remains the winningest head football coach in program history, compiling a 123-47-2 record across 14 seasons in Aggieland from 1989-2002. Under Slocum's guidance, the Aggies never posted a losing season and delivered four conference championships, including three Southwest Conference titles (1991, 1992, 1993) and one Big 12 Championship (1998).
In addition to those accomplishments, Slocum led the Maroon & White to 11 bowl game appearances and multiple nationally ranked finishes. His teams dominated in conference play in the early 1990s, highlighted by a 29-game unbeaten streak in the Southwest Conference from 1991-94. The Aggies dominated at home during Slocum's tenure, accumulating a 67-11-1 record at Kyle Field that includes a 22-game unbeaten streak from 1996-2000.
Known for his defensive philosophy, Slocum helped build the famed "Wrecking Crew" defense into one of the most respected units in college football. He coached 64 players that were drafted by the NFL, including eight first-round selections.
His excellence was recognized nationally with his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2012. Slocum was inducted into the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008 and was a recipient of the Amos Alonzo Stagg Award in 2014.
Beyond the field, Slocum served on the AFCA Board of Trustees from 2001-17, including a stint as President. He has performed as Texas A&M's interim Director of Athletics three times (2019, 2022, 2024) and served two years on the College Football Playoff Selection Committee (2019-20).
Slocum is the first Aggie to win the Lamar Hunt Lifetime Achievement Award and is the first recipient of the honor since 2019.
