TEXAS A&M POSTGAME QUOTES
HEAD COACH Mike Sherman
"I take my hat off to them and to their coaching staff. Coach Brock did a great job with this game. We preached about being patient, being patient. Just don't give up the big play. The idea of defending the option is a lot easier than actually doing it."
(on Jorvorskie Lane) "I thought he did a nice job. The offense blocked well for him as well. I thought he did a good job."
(on Trent Hunter) "We had about 7 or 8 true freshmen play today and about 6 or 7 redshirt freshmen. He had his first start today in kind of an interesting situation. He did a lot for us. He's just a fired-up kid and he's got a lot of juice."
(on the quarterbacks) "Going into this game I was very concerned simply becase the time of possession this offense utilizes. Starting off we didn't do very well. Stephen's shoulder going out there wasn't 100%, Jerrod Johnson didn't throw very much this week. But I thought they both played very hard and did very well."
(on the defense) "I thought the guys played extremely hard. We had three personal fouls, and that's inexcusable. But I'm excited about winning this first game at home."
(on Stephen McGee) "McGee injured his shoulder exactly how he injured it the first time. It's almost identical to what happened last time."
(on Jamie McCoy) "Last week was probably his best game. he played well this week. he continues to mature and grow as a t.e. and I think one day he'll be a force for us."
(on the playcalling being afffected by injuries) "If it was going to be where we had to come back and score to win the game, we would have had to employ vertical throws."
(on Michael Bennett) "I really don't know (about his status). It might have been just a little piece of cartiledge that locked up. I was under the impression that he was going to be ok, but I really don't know."
(on Jordan Peterson) "He was definitely off of this ball game and it will be a day-to-day decision next week."
DEFENSIVE LINEMAN Paul Freeney
(on the fumble return) "I was just working on the play and #46 made a great play, and then I saw the ball pop out. We do the scoop-and-score in practice. I was just doing what we practiced."
(on Trent Hunter) "Today he did not play like a true freshman. Today he played like a senior. I just want to tip my hat to the whole defense today."
FULLBACK JOVORSKIE LANE
(on playing more now) "It's coaching decisions. It feels good. My role is playing fullback and that's what I'm doing."
(on his weight) "From January to now, I've lost a lot of weight. Coach and I talk about that. I tell him "coach, it's hard," and he understands that."
QUARTERBACK Jerrod Johnson
(on Jorvorskie) "J played really well. over the summer he really worked on finding the holes. He really showed a knowledge of the game and knowing where to be tonight."
(on the offensive line) "I'm pretty confident in the offensive line. We had a lot of injuries last week. You know, you go in the training room and the entire offense is in there, so we joked about that. But I have a lot of confidence going into Big 12."
(on his shoulder) "Every week there's something different. You've got to be mentally focused as a quarterback. I've just got to work hard and I should be alright."
(on getting the first win at home) "It feels good as a team to get the first win at home. The momentum as a team is going to benefit from this game going into Big 12."
SAFETY Trent Hunter
"It feels good. Coming out in the week and practicing hard and coming out in the game and doing what we practice feels good."
(on starting against Army rather than against a passing team) "I definitely would rather come out and start against a running team. You get a few tackles and you feel good, you know-- all of those emotions running through you."
WIDE RECEIVER Jeff Fuller
(On what A&M had to do offensively with all of the injuries) "Getting by with what we have, I feel, is a good quality because everyone is qualified to be out there."
(on getting the first home win) "That was definitely a huge win at home, regardless of what the point deficit was. This was my first win at home as an Aggie and it feels good. I'm looking forward to going out and celebrating with my teammates."
(on his touchdown catch) "As an offense, you have the guys who make the big plays. I guess we weren't finishing-coach was talking about how we weren't doing a good job finishing off our blocks. It felt good to be the guy who made the big play."
TIGHT END Jamie McCoy
"Right now I'm just trying to do whatever I can to help the team win-as everybody else is. I'm just trying to know my role and do it to the best of my ability. Every game our catches are increasing a little bit and we're getting touchdowns. I just feel good about where we're headed right now."
(on getting the first win at home) "It's disappointing when you can't get that win at home with the fans we have. But we played better against Miami last week and we played well against Army. I think our confidence level is where it needs to be going into the Big 12."
OFFENSIVE LINEMAN Kevin Matthews
"Anytime you play a military team, you know they will be able to last the whole game. They are so disciplined and well-trained that you can't let them off lightly. We knew we weren't going to be able to run them over so we were able to work on our fundamentals all week. When we started doing that in the game, we were able to open the passing and running game."
LINEBACKER Matt Featherston
"Offenses like this one thrive on little plays throughout the game. When they would get that five-yard gain for a first down, we knew we would have to get back to the basics to be able to shut them down."
DEFENSIVE END Cyril Obiozor
"The key is that everybody took care of their responsibility. When you play an option team like this, everybody has their job and when you don't do it, you hang 10 other guys out to dry. Everybody did what they were supposed to do and it ended up taking care of itself."
RUNNING BACK Mike Goodson
"We went in after the first half and made the adjustments to what they were doing. We came out in the second half and played better. A win like this is a good boost. It gives everybody confidence and gives both of our quarterbacks a win under their belts. Ultimately, it propels everybody to better games."
ARMY POSTGAME QUOTES
FULLBACK COLLIN MOONEY
"We ran the option well today. (on final play) It's a game of inches and we needed that inch. We fought as hard as we could; we just came up short. We made the right reads all day. Being from Texas, this was a great experience for me."
LINEBACKER FRANK SCAPPATICCI
"We figured they would come at us with their power running game. We came out with a lot of intensity and very physical. Our tackling was very good. We had somebody watching over No. 3 (Mike Goodson) the whole game. The coaches did a good job and put us in the right direction."
HEAD COACH STAN BROCK
"I was real proud of our kids today from start to finish. We had a great week of practice and we played the way we know how to play. We got out-scored; that's the only negative. There are a lot of positives that came out of this. The turnover before half was big. We would have liked to have had that one back. Our goal was to win the turnover battle today. They had one for seven (points) and we had an interception. Chip (Bowden) is a tough kid and works very hard. He has a lot of room to improve and that's the beauty of it. I'm proud of the way we played and we can continue to get better."
