BRYAN, Texas - The Texas A&M western riders turned in their strongest performance of the season on Friday, leading the second-ranked Aggie equestrian team to an 11-8 win over No. 3 Auburn at the Brazos County Expo Complex.
Facing the highest ranked opponent to ever visit the Expo Complex, the two-time defending national champions won seven of nine rides on the afternoon. Combined with four victories on the hunter seat side, the overall effort kept A&M (4-0) perfect on the year and gave the Aggies their first-ever win over the Tigers (5-1).
Victories over fences by senior Brooke Coleman, junior Lia Chafee and sophomore Kori Pickett staked A&M to an early lead over the visitors. The Aggie horsemanship squad then posted a near sweep of Auburn, as senior Randi Standley, juniors Kelsey Adams and Katie Lisabeth, and sophomore Carey Nowacek each won to make the score 7-3. Highlighting the performance was Nowacek, who earned her fifth career MVP award and set a new team season high with a 76-71 win over Kristin Hansen.
The Tigers climbed back into the show on the flat, picking up four victories to cut the A&M lead to 8-7. Junior Elizabeth Solch remained unbeaten on the season in the discipline for the Aggies, however, downing Auburn's Ali Loprete 75-63.
Needing three points in reining to secure a win, A&M's Becca Murray and Randi Standley out-rode their opponents to put the team one win away from victory. Junior Abigail Grabein then followed by recording the clinching point, defeating Jillian Fuller, 70-66.
Texas A&M returns to action next Friday, Nov. 12 when the Aggies travel to Waco to face No. 8 Baylor. Show time is set for 1 p.m. A&M will then return home to wrap the fall season against Kansas State on Saturday, Nov. 20.
