COLLEGE STATION – The No. 9 Texas A&M equestrian team notched their first SEC victory of the season with an 11-7 victory over the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs.
The Aggies were led by Anna Rea and Hannah Jechow, the MOP winners in their disciplines, as they defeated Georgia in three of four disciples in the first conference meet in the Hildebrand Equine Complex.
“Anytime you're able to take down a reigning national champion, it's a good day,” said head coach Tana McKay. “You could see all the effort and practice these girls have been putting in. Georgia gave us a run for our money, like we expected, and the girls stepped up to the challenge.”
The Aggies opened the day with victories in equitation over fences and horsemanship, 3-2 and 4-1, respectively. A dominant horsemanship performance, highlighted by victories from Logan Pluhar, Molli Jacobs, Kaci Fisher and Carolyn Day, was won by a decisive 363.5-352.5 margin.
Hunter seat wins for the Aggies came from Marlena Parker, Alex Desiderio and Leah Chenelle over fences and Anna Rea on the flat.
A&M's excellent western performance was continued by the reining squad, where victories from Sarah Kate Grider, Laura Sumrall and Hannah Jechow closed out the victory for the Aggies as they head into the midseason break.
“We're going to use this time to give both our girls and our horses a break,” said McKay. “Then we're going to work on getting regrouped for the rest of the season.”
The Aggies will return to action on Friday, Jan. 30, when they will take on New Mexico State at the Hildebrand Equine Complex. Check back to 12thMan.com and follow @AggieEquestrian on Twitter for the latest news and results of the 2014-15 season.
