BROOKINGS, S.D. – The top-ranked Texas A&M Equestrian team downed South Dakota State, 12-7, Saturday at the DeHaan Equestrian Center.
"I am proud of the girls for coming here and riding well against horses we knew nothing about," head coach Tana McKay said. "I feel like they were really smart on some rides in a totally different environment. Was everything perfect? No, but it gives us some things to work on for our final two meets of the fall. Overall, I am pleased with how we competed and Ellie Wilkins and South Dakota State put on a great meet today."
The Aggies (3-1, 1-1 SEC) and Jackrabbits were knotted at two after the day's first event, Equitation over Fences. Senior Haley Webster led off with an 82-74 victory over Jacey Chorlton, before junior Rachael Hake defeated Blair Wright, 77-75. Junior Alex Desiderio and Jessica Andronowitz tied at 80.
Texas A&M took the lead into the half, winning Horsemanship, 3-2. Senior Rachel Lucht topped Nichole Zazula, preceding junior Avery Ellis' 72.5-71.5 win over Nicole Siebold. Senior Kaci Fisher defeated Angela Lopez, 70-67, giving the Aggies a 5-4 advantage.
The Maroon and White took a commanding 9-5 lead, winning Equitation on the Flat, 4-1. Sophomore Rebekah Chenelle earned the first point of the event with an 82-0 victory over Jessica Andronowitz and was named MOP for her performance. Junior Maddie Swem knocked off Jacey Chorlton, 82-80, before Hake topped Natalie Howard, 83-79. Senior Anna Rea bettered Jessica Martinez, 84-82.
In Reining, junior Jaci Marley clinched the victory for the Aggies with a 72.5-69.5 victory over Alicia Johnson. Senior Sarah Kate Grider earned MOP honors after defeating Christina Dexter, 73-68, before junior Madison Bohman closed the meet with her fourth victory of the season.
The Aggies return to action for their home opener on Nov. 5 against No. 3 Georgia at the Hildebrand Equine Complex at 10 a.m. Admission to the meet is free.
