No. 3 Texas A&M to host No. 8 SMU on Senior Day
Mar 18, 2016 | Equestrian
COLLEGE STATION – The No. 3 Texas A&M equestrian team will host its final home meet of the season Saturday against No. 8 SMU at the Hildebrand Equine Complex. Action will get underway at 11 a.m. with Equitation on the Flat and Reining.
The Aggies (9-3, 3-3 SEC) are coming off a narrow loss on March 5 at No. 1 Auburn, while the Mustangs are 5-7 on the season.
"Our girls got a couple of days off for spring break, but we are back to the grind for another tough matchup," head coach Tana McKay said. "We have some kinks that we need to work out before we head to the SEC Championships next week, but we have been working hard in practice. SMU is a really good team, so we have our work cut out for us. I am excited to see how we come out and compete in our last home meet."
For the season, senior Logan Pluhar leads A&M with a 10-2-1 record in Reining while senior Ashley Dotson holds a 9-2-1 record in the event. Sophomore Avery Ellis and junior Rachel Lucht enter Saturday on a two-meet winning streak in Horsemanship and lead the team with seven wins apiece. In Equitation on the Flat, sophomore Alex Desiderio and senior Audrey Gallagher lead the Aggies with six wins, while Desiderio has a team-high eight wins in Equitation over Fences.
Following the completion of the meet, A&M will honor its 11 seniors.
"Senior days are always fun and nostalgic," McKay said. "For the kids, it will be the last time they ride here in the facility on these horses with this team. Seeing how they grow up from freshmen to productive citizens and going off to the real world is fun to watch. That is part of the reasons why we do this job is to help the kids not only athletically, but to help them achieve their goals outside of the arena."
