Apr 17, 2018 | Equestrian
WACO, Texas – The fourth-seeded Texas A&M equestrian team begins competition at the NCEA Championships Wednesday at the Extraco Events Center.
Texas A&M, the defending national champions, is seeking its fourth overall title.
This year's championships feature a new format as seven national champions will be crowned with the overall team championship, discipline (Hunt Seat and Western) championships and event (Fences, Flat, Horsemanship and Reining) championships.
Action begins at 8:35 a.m. in the event national championships as the Aggies take on Fresno State in Reining. At 1:35 p.m., Texas A&M faces Sweet Briar in Equitation on the Flat and West Texas A&M in Horsemanship at 4:35 p.m. The Fences squad was awarded the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye and will face the winner of UT Martin and Fresno State Friday.
In the team competition, the Aggies begin their title defense against SMU Thursday beginning at 8 a.m.
The combined points each team accrues in the NCEA Hunter Seat Discipline Competitions (Equitation over Fences and Equitation on the Flat) and the NCEA Western Discipline Competitions (Horsemanship and Reining) will determine the Overall Discipline titles. Quarterfinalists receive two points, semifinalists acquire four points, event runner-ups get seven points and the event champion receives 11 points.
