Aggies Vanquish Lady Demons behind Malone’s 24 Points
Nov 17, 2024 | Women's Basketball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Jada Malone's career-best 24-point effort powered the Texas A&M women's basketball team to Sunday's 75-54 victory over the Northwestern State Lady Demons inside Reed Arena.
Malone dominated on the inside, making 10-of-13 buckets in the paint. She blocked a career-high three shots while matching career bests with nine rebounds and four steals. Malone scored 16 of her points in the second half as Texas A&M (3-2) held Northwestern State (2-3) at bay.
Lauren Ware produced her first double-double of the season and the 13th of her career. She registered season highs with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Sahara Jones added 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and a block.
Texas A&M maximized a 48-27 margin in rebounding and owned a 46-20 edge in points in the paint. A tenacious Aggie defense added 10 steals and seven blocks.
The first six minutes of the contest featured seesaw action, including five lead changes, before the Aggies went on an 8-0 run to pull ahead 16-10 at the 1:34 mark. The Lady Demons closed out the first quarter with an old-fashioned 3-point play by Mya Blake to shave the deficit to 16-13 at the break.
Texas A&M's shooting heated up late in the second quarter to take a 35-24 advantage into halftime. After shooting just 1-of-8 (12.5%) from the field to start the period, the Aggies closed out strong, making 6-of-7 (85.7%). Coulibaly's putback bucket with 21 seconds remaining in the quarter gave the Maroon & White their biggest lead of the quarter at 35-21.
With the Lady Demons lingering in striking distance, Texas A&M closed out the third quarter on an 16-6 surge in the final five minutes to take a 56-37 cushion into the final break.
Northwestern State could never cut the Aggie advantage under 17 points in the four quarter with Malone revving the A&M engine with 12 points in the period.
The Aggies' next time on the court will be in the Bahamas as they take on Villanova in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis Saturday, Nov. 23 at 8 p.m.

Head Coach Joni Taylor
On a career performance from Jada Malone...
"We talked about how hard she worked to get herself back, and Jada is capable of that. I thought we did a really good job of finding her. We knew we were going to have a size advantage, and I thought she did well running the floor, stealing, doing her work early, and she had a ton of no-move-needed scores where she could just catch it and turn. She had deep position, and we were able to find her."
On the team's response from Friday's loss...
"We had 20 turnovers against West Virginia and that's still not what hurt us. What hurt was not being able to rebound the basketball. I thought we were stingy defensively at times, but every time we had a breakdown, they made us pay for it and I just didn't think we rebounded the ball very well. Today, we still turned it over too much. Some of those were being aggressive, which I don't have a problem with, but when you are not being pressed and have 16 turnovers, it's too many."
Redshirt Junior Jada Malone
On recording a career-high 24 points...
"Credit to my teammates for giving me the ball and trusting me to put it away whenever I get it. They gave it to me in the right spots and I was there to make it."
Redshirt Senior Lauren Ware
On the team's response...
"Our intensity and urgency was really good. I think in the West Virginia game, the biggest factor was the third quarter. We knew at the start of this game we had to come out with a sense of urgency. This is a bounce-back game for us, and we need to have the right response. Joni always emphasizes what our response needs to be when we go through trials and tribulations, so I think we had the right energy and sense of urgency today."
