
Martinez Earns NCAA Singles Championship Bid

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M women's tennis team earned its third spot in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in Sunday's action at the ITA Central Sectional Championship. Violeta Martinez locked up a bid to the singles championship with her victory over No. 71 Daianne Hayashida of Iowa at Mitchell Tennis Center.
Martinez battled the Hawkeye and intensifying winds to score a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the quarterfinal consolation playoff.
The Aggies will also send No. 22 Mia Kupres to the singles portion of the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship. No. 38 Kupres/Daria Smetannikov secured a doubles' spot Saturday by winning in the sectional semifinal match.
The NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship is slated for November 18-23 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
In other action, Anna Perelman completed a perfect singles weekend in Waco. She claimed the title in the purple bracket at the H-E-B Invitational with a 6-1, 7-6(4) victory over Rice's Anushka Ashar. Perelman won all six sets in the tournament.
