MEET PREVIEW: SEC Outdoor Championships

LEXINGTON – The Texas A&M track & field team opens its outdoor postseason campaign at the SEC Championships held at Shively Track & Field Stadium May 15-17.
The Aggies travel to Kentucky to kickstart postseason action, entering the meet ranked as the No. 2 team in the country on the men's side and No. 4 on the women's by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. A&M's reign in the top five of the ranks extends to eight weeks, as they have done so at all ranking checkpoints throughout the season.
Regular-Season Wrap Up
A&M prepared for the business end of its schedule with 10 regular-season meets, impressing throughout winning 81 events and setting six new school records.
Among the group of school record breakers included standout freshman Debora Cherono who broke both the women's 1,500m (4:15.99) and 3,000m steeplechase (9:57.07), Heather Abadie in the pole vault (4.41m/14-5.5), Cooper Cawthra in the men's 1,500m (3:36.79), the men's DMR (9:26.83) which included Luca Santorum, Cutler Zamzow, Sam Whitmarsh and Cawthra and finally the men's 4xMile (16:31.10) quartet of Victor Kibiego, Ondrej Gajdos, Gilbert Rono and Diego Heredia.
Another outstanding performance came from A&M's rookie phenom Sofia Yakushina, as she broke the NCAA freshman record in her collegiate debut of the heptathlon. She strung together a two-day performance which totaled in 6,260 points, breaking the previous record set in 2021 by 60 points.
Top-Ranked Aggies
Entering the championships the Maroon & White boast 16 top-10 marks nationally, with an even split of eight on both the men's and women's sides.
Auhmad Robinson headlines the men's group, as he ranks first in the 400m (44.61) and third in the 200m (20.21), Ja'Qualon Scott also ranks nationally in two events, sitting fifth in both the 110m hurdles (13.30) and 400m hurdles (49.37). Kimar Farquharson sits seventh in the 800m (1:45.99) and Aleksandr Solovev is third in the pole vault (5.61m/18-4.75). Finally the men's 4x400m relay group hold both the fifth (3:02.15) and sixth (3:02.26) times in the country.
For the women, Yakushina tops the national ranks at No. 1 in the heptathlon (6,260), while Jasmine Montgomery is also at the top of the NCAA in the 200m (22.17). Camryn Dickson shows her sprint versatility, holding fourth in the 200m (22.39) and fifth in the 100m (11.04). Jaiya Covington holds fourth in the 100m hurdles (12.77) and Winny Bii is third in the triple jump (13.74m/45-1). Rounding out the ranks is a pair of times from the 4x100m groups who sit seventh (42.94) and 10th (43.04).
Last Year's Championships
At the 2024 championships, A&M recorded a third-place result on the men's side and finished fourth on the women's. The team brought a 10-medal haul back to Aggieland which included five gold, two silver and three bronze.
Of the medal-winning group, the Maroon & White return the women's pole vault champion Heather Abadie, men's 800m champion Sam Whitmarsh and men's 3,000m steeplechase champion Victor Kibiego, silver medalist in the 110m hurdles Scott and bronze medalist in the pole vault Jack Mann III.
The Field
All 16 programs have a women's team entered into the meet, while there will 15 on the men's side. Of those men's teams, 12 are ranked in the top-25 nationally and 11 land in the rankings for the women.
