Aggie Women Finish Second, Men Fourth at SEC Championships

LEXINGTON – The Texas A&M track & field team secured a pair of top-four team finishes at the SEC Championships Saturday at the Shively Track & Field Stadium.
The Aggies capped off an impressive showing at the conference championships, finishing second in the women's team standings with 81.5 points and fourth on the men's with 77 points. The group added 10 medals to its tally on the final day, bringing its total to 15 over the three-day meet which includes three gold, five silver and seven bronze.
Sam Whitmarsh captured the Aggies lone title on the day, as he defended his 800m crown after crossing the line in 1:45.35 following a sprint finish on the home straight. The senior's win made him the first athlete to defend the title in the event since the Aggies' Devin Dixon who won three straight from 2017-19. Luca Santorum also impressed in the event, adding two points to the team total after a seventh-place result in 1:47.23.
Opening the finals on the track was the women's 4x100 relay team consisting of Latasha Smith, Camryn Dickson, Bria Bullard and Jasmine Montgomery. The group got the ball rolling, as they finished third in the event with a time of 43.06.
Winny Bii set the tone in the field, as the junior leaped an impressive personal-best mark of 14.01m/45-11.75 to take the silver medal in the women's triple jump. Her leap was the best wind-legal mark in the event and broke the Kenyan outdoor national record and jumped her up to No. 2 in A&M history. Victoria Kadiri also had a great showing, leaping a season-best distance of 13.41m/44-0 for fifth.
Capturing the second silver medal of the evening and first on the track was Cooper Cawthra in the 1,500m, as the senior's famous kick made another appearance moving from eighth to second in the final 400m to finish in 3:52.14. Santorum opened his day in the event and followed Cawthra's move on the final lap, advancing from 10th to fourth and earned five points to the men's total after finishing in 3:52.62.
Heather Abadie concluded her final SEC Championships on the podium, as the senior shared the bronze in the women's pole vault following a clearance of 4.26m/13-11.75. Her medal-winning performance marked the fourth of her career and third straight at the outdoor championships.
Jaiya Covington kept the momentum rolling on the track in the women's 100m hurdles, crossing the line in third in 12.92 ensuring her sweep of the bronze medals across indoor and outdoor SEC's. Ja'Qualon Scott followed in the men's 110m hurdles, emulating his teammates performance, also capturing third with a time of 13.18 which marks four-straight short hurdle medals in the past two indoor and outdoor championships. Scott's day didn't end there, as he did the hurdle double taking another bronze medal in the 400m hurdles finishing in 49.07.
Montgomery's busy final day was headlined in the 200m, as the junior won her first individual conference medal after finishing second in 22.39. Dickson also added a pair of points in the event, crossing the line seventh with a mark of 22.97. The duo wasn't done there, as they also competed in the 100m final and finished sixth (11.29) and ninth (11.40), respectively.
The men's team concluded the day with the 4x400m relay, earning the final silver medal of the meet for the Maroon & White. The quartet of Cutler Zamzow, Hossam Eddine Hatib, Kimar Farquharson and Auhmad Robinson crossed the line in 3:02.46 for second place.
The Maroon & White added another 13 points through five point scorers on the day, including Zamzow and Robinson in the 400m as they finished fifth (46.00) and eighth (46.65), respectively. Bryce McCray added four in the 400m hurdles, placing fifth in 49.88, while the men's 4x100m crossed the line sixth in 39.23 and women's 4x400m clocked 3:34.71 for seventh.
