MEET PREVIEW: NCAA West First Round

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M track & field team continues its postseason campaign as it hosts the NCAA West First Round at E.B Cushing Stadium May 28-31.
The Aggies are set to battle for spots in the NCAA Outdoor Championships, as those who finish in the top-12 of their respective events will lead the way to Eugene, Oregon, for the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Championships. A&M sits in elite standard nationally, as the women sit in second and the men fourth in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's rankings.
Looking back to last year's regional, the Maroon & White booked 26 tickets to the outdoor championships, with 15 coming on the women's side and 11 on the men's.
Last Time Out
A&M put on a dominant showing at the SEC Championships as the women finished second and the men fourth. The Aggies brought home 15 medals over the three-day meet including three gold, five silver and seven bronze.
Highlighting the SEC champions was Sofia Yakushina in the women's heptathlon, finishing top five in all seven events accumulating 6,075 points. The freshman wasn't done there as she also claimed bronze in the individual long jump (6.18m/20-3.5) making her the only women's field athlete to receive two medals at the meet. Aleksandr Solovev continued the momentum in the men's pole vault claiming the SEC title along with a school record of 5.72m/18-9.25. Sam Whitmarsh capped off the golds in the men's 800m, crossing the line in 1:45.35 to defend his title.
The Field
Texas A&M will be joined in College Station by over 100 schools from the West region. All athletes in attendance competing at the West Preliminary Round are ranked in the top 48 nationally in their respective events.
Top-Ranked Aggies
Solovev tops the NCAA in the men's pole vault with a clearance of 5.72m/19-9.25. Auhmad Robinson is second overall in the 400m (44.61), Ja'Qualon Scott ranks fifth nationally in the 110m hurdles (13.18) and the 400m hurdles (48.85). Sam Whitmarsh sits fifth in the 800m (1:45.35). Lastly, the men's 4x400 relay group hold both the sixth (3:02.15), seventh (3:02.26) and eighth (3:02.46) best times in the country.
For the women, Yakushina continues her reign at No. 1 in the heptathlon (6,260), Winny Bii continues the leading performances ranking first in the triple jump (14.01m/45-11.75) while Jasmine Montgomery is at second in the NCAA in the 200m (22.17) and Camryn Dickson holds fifth (22.39). Jaiya Covington rounds out the group in fourth in the 100m hurdles (12.77).
