LOGAN, Utah – The No. 10 Texas A&M volleyball team downed Utah State for its fifth-straight win Friday evening at the Estes Center, 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-19).
Texas A&M (5-0) put on an offensive clinic in their victory over the Aggies of Utah State (1-3), as they hit .415 percent as a team behind Maddie Waak's 57 assists and had four individuals record 10+ kills. Emily Hellmuth paced the group with a season-high 18, while Logan Lednicky (15), Ifenna Cos-Okpalla (11) and Kyndal Stowers (11) followed behind.
The Maroon & White shot out of a cannon in the opening frame behind Hellmuth's five kills, as they forged a six-point advantage early (10-4). Utah State dug in and fought its way back into the set, as head coach Jamie Morrison gathered his squad (17-16). The hosts continued their streak and narrowly stole the first set, 25-23.
Nothing separated the teams through the midway point in the second frame, as they were tied on 11 occasions to 15-15. The Texas A&M Aggies managed to create a two-point gap late which forced Utah State to huddle, however it wouldn't be enough as Logan Lednicky's three kills in the final five points secured the set (25-21) and knotted the match at one frame all.
Texas A&M kept the momentum on its side of the court, as it kickstarted the third on a 10-7 run. The Maroon & White piled on through five kills, two blocks and a Utah State error to extend their advantage to seven as the hosts burned their second timeout of the frame (18-11). It remained all Texas A&M, closing the set with another impressive 7-3 streak (25-14) to take the lead in the match, 2-1.
Once again holding their rhythm, the Maroon & White made their presence felt with a 6-1 run to start the frame. Utah State battled back within one at the midway point of the frame, but Texas A&M put its foot on the gas once again behind Hellmuth who extended the advantage to four thanks to a pair kills and an ace (20-16).
