No. 2 Aggies Advance Past No. 12 Vanderbilt at ITA Indoor Championship

CHAMPAIGN – The No. 2 Texas A&M women's tennis earned an impressive, 4-2, victory over the No. 12 Vanderbilt Commodores in Friday's ITA National Team Indoor Championship action at Atkins Tennis Center, to advance to the quarterfinals.
The Maroon & White jumped out front during doubles play, capturing two of the three courts to take opening point, 1-0. A&M set the tone on court 1 as Mia Kupres/Lucciana Perez earned a 6-4 win over No. 3 Sophia Webster/Celia-Belle Mohr. Vanderbilt responded on court 2 with a 6-4 decision against Violeta Martinez/Anna Perelman. The Aggies clinched the doubles point on court 3 behind a 6-4 victory from Lexington Reed/Daria Smetannikov over No. 49 Erin Pearce/Mia Yamakita.
The Maroon & White extended its lead early in singles play as No. 41 Perez delivered a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win over No. 15 Valeria Ray on court 2, improving to 7-0 in dual singles play this spring. The Commodores answered on court 6, where Pearce defeated Tilde Stromquist, 6-2, 6-2, before Vanderbilt evened the score on court 3 as No. 40 Bridget Stammel topped Lexington Reed, 6-2, 6-4.
Texas A&M regained momentum on court 4 behind Martinez, who earned a 7-5, 6-3 win against No. 56 Yamakita to push the Maroon & White back in front. No. 46 Kupres sealed the match on court 1, rallying past No. 24 Mohr in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, to clinch the victory.
All three of the Aggies' singles wins came against opponents ranked inside the ITA top 60. No. 96 Smetannikov was locked in a third set with Trinetra Vijayakumar on court 5, when the match concluded.

"Overall, I am very pleased with our performance. First round matches are always tough in a tournament format for a variety of reasons. We only lost to two teams last year with Vanderbilt being one of them and they basically have the same team if not a little bit better this year, so I am very happy with our overall level of play today."
