Nnamdi Claims Javelin National Title on Opening Day of NCAA Championships

EUGENE – Texas A&M track & field's Zaza Nnamdi won the men's javelin national title on the opening day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships Wednesday at Hayward Field.
Nnamdi's national crown highlighted the first day of the championships for the Maroon & White, as the Awka, Nigeria, native dominated from start to finish. He set the tone from his first throw, recording a mark of 82.26m/269-10 which jumped him to the top of the leaderboard. The seniors initial mark held throughout the contest and ensured his win. Nnamdi's NCAA title earns him First Team All-America honors and marks Texas A&M's third win in the event at the meet and first since 2017.
On the track, Peter Narumbe secured the Aggies' first finals spot in the 800m. The freshman ran in the second heat of the event and executed another signature kick, which moved him up from fourth to first in the final 100m of the race to cross the line in 1:45.49. His mark placed him fourth overall in the qualifying round and he stands as the only freshman to reach the final. Reece Sharman-Newell finished just outside of the advancing positions in the event, taking 11th in 1:46.23 and earned Second Team All-America status.
Ja'Qualon Scott kept that momentum rolling, securing his spot in the 400m hurdles final as the No. 1 overall qualifier. He ran in the third section of the contest, clocking a mark of 48.59 to advance to Friday. Scott also added a Second Team All-America honor to his resume after finishing 14th in the 110m hurdles in 13.45.
The final advancing spot claimed on the first day was courtesy of the 4x400m quartet of Eric Hemphill III, Musa Isah, DeMarco Escobar and Kimar Farquharson. The group sat in fifth entering the last leg, but a heroic 44.40 split from Farquharson brought the team all the way to first in the heat and secured automatic advancement to the final with a time of 3:01.64.
Two other members of the throws group garnered Second Team All-America honors, as Sam Hankins took 12th in the javelin with a toss of 72.58m/238-1, while Henry Zimmerman earned his in the hammer throw with a mark of 66.46m/218-0 which was good for 15th.
Farquharson wrapped up the opening day's honors on the track running 45.62 in the 400m to place 11th and earn Second Team accolades.
Aleksandr Solovev concluded his outdoor season with a 13th-place finish in the pole vault following a clearance of 5.50m/18-0.5.
Blake Harris kickstarted his decathlon campaign, concluding his first five events with 3,779 points and currently sits 234 points outside of the top eight.
