The fifth-seeded Texas A&M softball team will face the No. 1 overall-seeded Florida Gators in a must-win game Sunday night at 6 p.m. or 30 minutes following the conclusion of the Arizona State/Alabama game for entry into the 2008 Women?™s College World Series Championship Series.
The Aggies were forced into a second game with the Gators after dropping a 6-1 decision in a noon contest. Francesca Enea hit two homeruns to drive in three of Florida?™s six runs. The sophomore was 2-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored. Enea reached on an A&M fielding error in the fourth that led to a three-run Gator inning.
A&M?™s lone run of the game came in the second inning. With one out Erin Glasco and Jami Lobpries drew back-to-back walks. In scoring position, Glasco was lifted for pinch runner Bailey Schroeder. Aggie shortstop Macie Morrow laced a single into rightfield to load the bases. A patient Rhiannon Kliesing worked Gator starter Stacey Nelson into a 3-1 count before earning an RBI on ball four.
Gibson snapped a 15-complete game streak and fell to 40-2 on the season after surrendering four runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of work. Kliesing came in to relieve Gibson in the fourth and finished the game with 3.1 innings in the circle allowing two runs on four hits. She walked three and struckout one.
Nelson allowed one run on three hits and walked four, striking out six Aggie hitters. Stephanie Brombacher earned the win, improving to 20-0 on the season after silencing the A&M bats posting zeros in four innings on the mound.
Florida evened the all-time series versus the Aggies at two wins apiece. The last time A&M allowed an opponent to score six runs was in the 5-6 loss to Oklahoma State on April 16, 2008. The loss to the Cowgirls was the Aggies?™ only Big 12 loss and sent A&M on a 17-game winning streak.
