NORMAN, Okla - The Texas A&M softball team suffered a 7-3 loss to No. 15 Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon at the OU Softball Stadium.
The Aggies committed a season-high four errors to fall to 27-16 overall and 5-6 in the Big 12. In front of 1,128 fans, the Sooners improved to 33-13 and 10-4 in conference play.
"We made some mistakes today and I've been talking about how solid our defense is and today it wasn't so solid," said head coach Jo Evans. "Defensively we have to make plays; it's as simple as that."
Despite the final score, the Aggies got out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Sophomore Erin Glasco ripped a one-out double to right center to score Villarreal from second.
"It was good to see us go out there in the first inning and put some pressure on them," Evans said.
Amber Flores evened the score, 1-1, with a solo home run to left in the bottom of the inning.
In the second, three Aggie errors and three Sooner singles gave Oklahoma four runs and a 5-1 lead.
"If we could have stayed away from the four-spot they put up in the second inning, it's a different ball game," continued Evans.
Samantha Ricketts hit a two-run shot in the fourth to increase the OU advantage to 7-1. Flores was on base via a single.
The A&M defense cleaned up and retired the Sooners in order in the third and turned a double play (6-4-3) in the infield to end the fifth.
In the sixth frame, a bunt single by freshman Kelsea Orsak and a walk by Glasco put the second runner in scoring position for the Aggies, but an OU double play and a pickoff ended the inning.
In the top of the seventh, sophomore Rhi Kliesing drew a one-out walk and pinch hitter Taryn Broussard followed with a line-drive single to center before junior Macie Morrow doubled over the head of the OU left fielder and scored both runners to narrow the score, 7-3. Morrow returned to the lineup today and has now hit in eight consecutive games.
D.J. Mathis threw four innings for the win and gave up one run on three hits and struck out seven. Kliesing earned the loss after giving up seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits and fanning three. Allee Allen picked up a save allowing two runs on three hits in three innings of work.
The Aggies put runners on base in every inning but the fifth as Rau singled to left in the second, Villarreal singled up the middle in the third and Ridley was hit by a pitch in the fourth.
The Aggies play the final game of the series in Norman tomorrow. First pitch is set for 12:04 p.m. on ESPN.
