COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M softball team was held scoreless in a 3-0 loss to Iowa State on Saturday afternoon at the Aggie Softball Complex.
Coming off of an upset of No. 10 Missouri, the Cyclones (23-26, 5-10 Big 12) picked up their second consecutive win over a higher seeded Big 12 opponent and held the Aggies (28-18, 5-8 Big 12) to four hits. ISU totaled just one more hit (5) than A&M, but timely singles and aggressive base running pushed its three runs across the plate.
"I didn't like what I saw from us today," said head coach Jo Evans. "We were lackluster and I didn't see a lot of fire in us. This was a must-win (game) for us. We're trying to make a push in the conference standings and then we came out and let one get away."
The Aggies retired the Cyclones in order the first three innings and freshman Kelsea Orsak tallied the first hit of the game in the bottom of the third with a two-out, line-drive single to center field. Orsak, however, was caught stealing for the final out of the inning.
In the top of the fourth, ISU's Carleigh Berry led off with a bloop single into shallow left center and stole second. With two outs, Amanda Bradberry reached base on an infield single. Berry never stopped running from second and slid into home safely under catcher Erin Glasco to get Iowa State out to a one-run lead.
The Cyclones added to their lead in the fifth with a solo home run to center from Sydni Jones.
In the seventh, Jones drove in Bradberry on a two-out, soft single on the right field line.
Sophomore Rhi Kliesing and Glasco each singled in the later innings, but no Aggie base runner was ever moved into scoring position.
Freshman Rebecca Arbino (9-6) got the nod in the circle and held Iowa State to three runs on five hits. She also fanned four batters and walked none. Rachel Zabriskie (16-21) earned the win with a seven-strikeout performance.
A&M plays its final regular season home game against the Cyclones at noon tomorrow. Seniors Erin Glasco and Savana Lloyd will be honored following the game.
"We have to come out tomorrow and be better," said Evans. "Offensively we have to put something together."
