OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The sixth-seeded Texas A&M softball team dropped a heart-breaker, 5-4, to third-seeded Baylor on Saturday afternoon at the Big 12 Championship.
In a back-and-forth battle, junior Alex Reynolds tied the game, 4-4, with a solo home run to lead off the seventh, but a bases-loaded bloop single by Meagan Weldon in the bottom half of the inning proved the game-winner.
In a disappointing loss, the Aggies (31-20) now await word of their berth to the 2009 NCAA Tournament on the Division I softball selection show Sunday at 9 p.m. on ESPNU. The Lady Bears (37-19) advance to the Big 12 Championship semifinal game against Missouri at 5 p.m.
"We just didn't execute defensively today and we can do better than that," said A&M head coach Jo Evans. "The great thing about the mistakes we made is that they are mistakes we're not going to make again. They were uncharacteristic of us."
Senior Erin Glasco recorded the first hit of the game with a two-out double to left center in the top of the first, but Big 12 Pitcher and Newcomer of the Year, Whitney Canion fanned three in the inning to leave the Aggies scoreless.
In the bottom of the first frame, Baylor got out to a 1-0 lead. Bree Hanafin reached on a bunt single and was scored from second on Courtney Oberg's RBI single through the right side.
In the top of the third, sophomore Macie Morrow put the ball in play and a throwing error by BU third baseman Brette Reagan and a second by right fielder Megan Turk scored Spittler, Orsak and Morrow to put the Aggies ahead, 3-1.
The Lady Bears came back and put up a three spot off of three hits in the fifth to regain a one-run lead. Alex Colyer scored two on a double down the left field line and proceeded to score from third after Oberg got in a rundown in a first and third situation.
A&M continued to fight and Reynolds' solo homer in the seventh knotted the score at four apiece. The Aggie third baseman launched her fourth homer of the year.
"Alex did a great job and wants to be up there in the clutch situation," Evans said. "It was great to see her drive the ball like that."
In the bottom of the seventh, two walks and a fielder's choice loaded the bases before Weldon's bloop single dropped into shallow left center for the game-winning hit.
